Motorama

Motorama is an indie racing game that has gone through a few changes, most notably it is now all about classic American cars. Hey, this is something I can really get behind as I think classic cars are really cool. However, having cool cars in your game is great, but they have to actually be in a “fun” game for them to really mean anything.

The 53 Belvedere Eldorado

There is a great selection of cars in the game and they do look great, but when you dig a little deeper, you might notice that something is a tad off. You see there are many classic cars in Motorama, but these are not officially licensed. For example, The 53 Belvedere Eldorado is actually a Cadillac. So, while there are many cool looking cars and they certainly look the part, they are not officially licensed so they never actually use the proper names. I have a feeling for a real car enthusiast this might be a turn-off.

How Is It Going Slick?

When you look at still pictures of this game, it looks great. The cars look super cool and slick, the scenery is detailed enough and the game has a nice shine to it all. However, in motion, there is just something a tad off with this game. It ties into the gameplay actually, but it gives the game a very low budget feel.

Ghost Cars!!!

It is the gameplay that really spoils what could have been a fun game in Motorama. The handling of the cars is actually quite fine. Driving feels good and if you were just driving around a track by yourself it could be a rather decent experience. However, the real point of this game is to take part in these “epic” races where you challenge other classic cars.

The idea is great, but the execution not so much. This is a game that has more than a few bugs. Most notably the way the AI can just drive through the other cars like they are not even there! You cannot do this! the AI is pretty dumb and can be frustrating to deal with. It is like the purpose of the AI is not to actually race you, but just screw you over.

You can customize your cars and you will earn new ones as you level up, but nothing ever really feels all that exciting. The progression has a kind of “why am I doing this?” feel the whole time you are playing the game.

5.5

I would not say that Motorama is the worst racing game I have ever played, but it is certainly one of the most bang average. I think if this was a game that was being sold at like 5 bucks or under, you could actually have some fun with it and forgive the problems that it has, but it is being sold for a far to high price for a game of this quality.

Pros:

  • I like the number of classic cars in the game
  • You can unlock more cars as you play
  • There are some customization options for tinkering with your cars
  • The visuals are not terrible
  • I like classic cars

Cons

  • The game feels very low budget in every regard
  • The way they get around the licensed cars is a bit strange

Game Reviews

I've Often Been asked how much I think an indie game should cost. Actually that's a complete lie, but for the sake of this review, let's pretend it's true. Well, in the case of Motorama - a fiendishly addictive and highly challenging 2D stunt bike game - I'd say around five quid, which by my estimation, is less than half the actual asking price.

Now don't get me wrong: Motorama has plenty to offer, sporting almost 40 vastly different levels that task you with performing stunts, traversing obstacles and collecting medals super-fast, a feat made all the harder by some spot-on physics that make your two-wheeled beast buck like a raging bull.

However, Motorama's problem doesn't lie with its gameplay, but rather in its complete lack of sheen. As a result, the game looks excruciatingly amateurish despite its charms. Add to this the over-inflated price, and you're left with a promising title that simply doesn't warrant the outlay. Pity.
