Better late than never is what I say as N1RV Ann-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action was actually supposed to come out in 2020, but it was delayed until 2021. What we have here is a cyberpunk themed visual novel that is actually a follow up to a game that was released back in 2016. This is a very stylish kind of game and if you enjoyed the first one, I see no reason as to why you would not enjoy this.
The Island of Saint Alicia
In the first game, VA-11 Hall-A the setting was a really cool place called Glitch City that was like something out of Bladerunner or Snatcher. This time around in N1RV Ann-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action the setting of the game is an artificial island called Saint Alicia which is experiencing a real boom. It still takes place in the same cyberpunk world from the original game, but just in a different part of it.
The main character of the game is a girl called, Sam who works in the Nirvana Bar. Another important character is a dude called Leon who is part of the mob by struggling with going straight to live a more normal family life. The whole game is story driven and the first game was great so I see no reason as to why this one would not be.
Shaken Not Stirred!
The majority of the gameplay is spent reading text and listening to people’s stories. In the first game, they would order a drink, and then you would make it. In N1RV Ann-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action things are a little bit different as you can decide what drink to give a customer. You cannot just give them whatever you want. You need to listen to them and then decide what drink is best for them. Like the first game, you have to select the ingredients and manually make the drink, think of it as a mini-game.
You Can’t Go Home
One aspect of N1RV Ann-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action that appears to be missing from VA-11 Hall-A is that it does not appear that you can go back to Sam or Leon’s place. In the first game, you could go back to the main character's place and interact with things and learn more about this world, I do hope that this kind of thing is in the final version of the game as I really enjoyed the world building of the first game.
This is a great looking game; it features some very stylish looking characters that would fit right in with a high-end anime! The character models have a lot of personality and the facial expressions in particular during the dialogue sections of the game really do help get you more invested in what is going on. There are some cut scenes too which are also of a very high-quality.
I think if you enjoyed the first game then N1RV Ann-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action is going to be right up your alley. I love the new setting and the way that the whole making drinks for your patron’s thing is a tad more complex I think will add a bit more to the gameplay.
If you did not play the first game, what are you waiting for? It was a fun and memorable experience so go and do that and if you like it, then check this game out.
