What we have here with Otaku's Adventure is one of the craziest games that you will play this year. The game is really weird, like really, really weird. The thing with this game is that it is the kind of game I can see many people truly hating and I get why. This is a game that is 100 percent not for everyone. It is on the verge of being so bad that it is somehow good if you know what I am saying.
I Am An Otaku Who Just Wants Love
The story that Otaku's Adventure is telling is all over the freaking place. You play as a nerdy Otaku who just wants to find love with a special girl, or in the case of this game any girl that will give him the time of day. He is willing to go to great lengths to get to know these girls better and fall in love.
The story is weird and it has some of the most absurd humor that you will encounter. Part of what makes the story so odd is the terrible translation. I am actually pretty sure that the translation is bad on purpose.
Where to start with the gameplay. Otaku's Adventure is made up of a bunch of crazy mini-games. You control a cat in a shooter, you have to shave, you have to change the batteries in an air conditioner remote, you even have to shoot people going after a limousine. This game is nuts and you never know what it is going to throw your way next. Yes, these mini-games are dumb, make no sense, and are about as shallow as you can get. However, there is a charm here that will make you smile. There is also a strange and basic RPG-style battle system going on as well.
The people who made this game are clearly deeply involved in the whole “Otaku” movement. I know that this may sound bad, but the game could not be any more “Japanese” anyone who gets a kick out of Japanese culture is going to find the way this game looks a lot of fun.
The soundtrack is just as “Japanese” as the visuals are. The soundtrack is all over the place and I am actually having a really hard time trying to describe what it is like. Just imagine the most over-the-top Japanese music and sound effects you can think of and that is what this game sounds like.
I fully understand why Otaku's Adventure has such a mixed reputation online. This game is all over the place in terms of the quality, but I am going to give this game the benefit of the doubt in this regard as I feel that they did not want to make a “bad” game, but they certainly wanted to make a very weird game and in that regard they 100 percent succeeded.
- The game is certainly nuts!
- Some of the girls are kind of cute
- There is a decent variety to the mini-games
- It is certainly the kind of game you will not forget
- The whole game is not that great (is that on purpose?)
- The translation is truly terrible, but again is this on purpose?
