Get ready for the utter insanity contained within Justin Roilands mind with Trover Saves the Universe by Squanch Games. Take control of a chair-bound alien who takes control of a second, more mobile, alien called Trover and fight through a world of puzzles and other dangers. See interesting alien landscapes, meet interesting aliens and chuckle all the way with some bizarre but poignant humor. Take a seat, grab your VR headset for the best experience and let’s get cracking.
The gameplay of Trover Saves the Universe is unique, there is no question about that. As I said in the opening, it follows a person who is actually controlling someone else. Just like you are sitting in a chair controlling the game, the person you control sits in a chair and controls someone else with a video game controller. It’s meta, I know, but its good and handles itself shockingly well.
The player is confined to their chair so a large portion of their movement is teleporting from place to place. Trover, the person the player controls, however, is free to run and jump around like a full-on adventure game hero and he will do the majority of the fighting and talking for you. I know that may sound weird but it actually translates really well.
There are unlockable and upgradable aspects of your chair that will allow for you to traverse the world in different ways, one such upgrade is the ability to move your chair to three distinct heights. What’s interesting about that is that you may encounter issues with your field of view when at a disadvantageous height compared to Trover. Maybe you can’t see him or his enemies because your view is blocked. Maybe you enjoy a more personal view at eye level but the mess of combat makes it hard to see anything.
This all works really well in tandem with the VR capabilities, but that’s not to say it doesn’t work without it. Even if you go VR-less, you’ll still love the game. Now, fair forewarning, this game is chock full of interesting things to look at but it is by no means as fully fleshed out as games like HALF LIFE: ALYX or Blood and Truth, it’s a bit closer to Moss, that game with the little mouse.
Ever bizarre, the story of the game is quite simple. You play a person whose dogs are stolen by a monster named Glorkon. He, essentially, inserts the dogs into his empty eye sockets and this somehow makes him very powerful. Its now up to you to save your dogs and the universe by extension. If you’re a fan of Rick and Morty then this sort of nonsensical story is right up your alley.
One of the strongest suits of the game is easily its humor and that is definitely one of its focal points. If you like Rick and Morty style humor or just enjoy a game that values comedy, then this will be a fantastic choice for you. I found myself chucking a considerable amount all the way through this.
A fan of interesting games that try something new with a nice slice of the funnies? Then you’re going to love this one.
