Today I am checking out Praey for the Gods which is a game that is currently in early access. This is one of those games that feels like it should have properly been released ages ago! It has been in early access for a while now and it does seem to take a while to go from update to update. One of the interesting things about this game is the interesting spelling of the first word. Did you know that the reason for this is because of a legal issue with the people who make the sci-fi game prey?
The Frozen Wilds
One of the things that I really like about Praey for the Gods is the world that they have created here. It is the kind of game that feels like it should be massively story driven, but it is actually not. Instead, you have the basic understanding of what is going on, what you have to do and you are set on your way. The land is in an eternal winter and you are on a quest to find, climb and dominate these giant beats, gods, creatures whatever you want to call them that are roaming the world.
Standing In The Shadow Of A Colossus
One of the things that made me and probably most other people who are interested in this game take notice was the clear inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus. Praey for the Gods is very proud of basing itself on that game and I think that is pretty cool. You roam the land looking for a beast and then you need to climb it and take it down! While the premise may be the same as Shadow of the Colossus, the execution has a few unique elements to it.
Fighting For Survival
To start with there is far more combat in Praey for the Gods. You will have many smaller enemies that you need to take down on your way. Granted combat is not happening all of the time, but there are certainly more times you have to fight smaller enemies in this game. I found the combat to be pretty fun and help add a bit of excitement to things as you were making your way from one beast to the next.
Link To The Wild
Another inspiration for Praey for the Gods if you ask me has to be The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The crafting, survival, and durability system at play here seems rather similar to what Nintendo did. This is one area where I wish the game would tone things down a tad. Your weapons seem to break way too quickly and it always feels like you are on the verge of running out of some kind of resource that is going to trip you up and make things more difficult for you.
A Chill In The Air
I love the way that the game looks. The whole frozen land thing has been done in games before, but playing Praey for the Gods really does send a bit of a shiver down your spine. It legit looks cold and I think the way that it is a tad darker makes you feel like you are actually in this frozen wasteland.
I have had a fun time playing Praey for the Gods and think that if you liked Shadow of the Colossus then you are the exact type of person that this game is aimed at. The one area that the game is lacking is actually content. It feels like it has been quite a while since they added something majorly new to the game.
There are more than a few beasts for you to find and climb in this game, but I do feel like it has been said more content is coming for a while now. Still, this is a game that is very easy for me to recommend, especially if you are looking for something to play during winter or the holiday break.
Pros:
- I love the setting of the game
- Combat is fun and greatly adds to the game
- The design of these beasts/gods is really cool
- I legit felt cold when playing the game and that was pretty neat
Cons:
- The durability of weapons/items can be more frustrating than it should be
- It is a game that has been in early access for a very long time
