Purrfect Date

With Steam being full of dating simulator type games, there has been a lucrative subgenre market for silly and comedy-focused dating sims that lampoon the classic dating sim style. Fans of Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator, I Love You, Colonel Sanders! and Hatoful Boyfriend will be familiar with the formula, but many games lack the heart and soul that Purrfect Date manages to create with each and every creative cat encounter.

While the art style might not be as flash as some of its contemporaries, Purrfect Date is a quintessential indie game that succeeds despite its modest budget and two person developer team.

Paws For Thought

The idea behind Purrfect Date is so exceedingly simple that players can instantly understand the game’s premise just from its punny title alone. Players will traverse through the game’s strange and feline focused story in what can be described as a mix between visual novel and dating simulator. And while the premise may sound wacky, the events that take place within the game’s story will leave you laughing, perplexed and even surprised at every turn.

If this all sounds a bit weird, then don’t worry because the developers seem to agree. There are several moments in the game where the devs seem to be poking fun at the whole idea to begin with. It’s all wonderfully meta, and it adds more layers of comedy to what is already a very funny game.

Cat People

As you might expect, the game’s humour is very much focused on cat humour, as well as many delightful puns. Players with cats will definitely appreciate the genuine appreciation the devs seem to have for our furry friends, and cat lovers will surely get a kick out of seeing such a labour of love to their favourite pets.

The Story

As this game is basically a visual novel, the story plays a pretty large role. The player takes control of a research assistant to Professor Pawpur, a wacky scientist character who brings you to a place called Cat Island to study the many felines living there.

After the character selection, players are soon shipped off to Cat Island to begin their research. There is a little trouble with the local security, specifically through a surly character named Zane. Once the player has been given clearance, they will then meet the eccentric Professor Pawpur. It’s here where the game’s main mechanics begin to unfold. Pawpur quickly details the reason for your trip to the island and provides you with a mobile phone as well as a cat-a-log—a vital cat research tool. With the cat-a-log, the player needs to scan any cats that they come across to help add to the professor’s important research effort.

Of course, spoiling the rest would ruin the fun. The rest of the game is spent juggling choices of which cats to spend time with (if any at all), and what activities to do (a choice between recon, romance and research).

7

Purrfect Date manages to succeed where other silly dating sim games fail. While Steam may be full of wacky comedy games, this one manages to tow the line between cheese and genuine emotion. Clearly a labour of love to everything cats, Purrfect Date is a very strange, very funny, and very unique game that anyone with a modicum of fondness to the feline species should check out.
