If you are looking for one of the best action games to have ever blessed a console, you are looking for Resident Evil 4 - Ultimate HD Edition. An astoundingly well-designed game from start to finish, RE4 is beloved by all who played it for its depiction of a survival horror game that doesn’t make you a weak faceless protagonist who just stumbles away from fights. In this you play as Leon Kennedy, resident evils resident heartthrob, and blast your way through a European village filled with crazy people. Let’s get into it.
Gameplay
Resident Evil 4 - Ultimate HD Edition is a third-person action shooter, but it was designed in a different time, thus it is not as fast paced as more recent games in that genre. Everything, from how you and the enemies move to finding weapons and ammo is much more deliberate and it works well with the ambiance. For the most part, the game still functions well. There are a few interface issues but they are pretty easy to ignore. There are also a few design choices, specifically relating to camera angles that can kind of mess you up if you aren’t expecting them, but after a while you get used to it.
A large portion of this game is spent running around, killing people and puzzle solving. But its up to you to make sure you make the most economic use of your inventory. Based on your play style, what you do think you’ll need to dedicate more space to? Different weapon varieties, ammo, or health supplies. Its totally up to you.
This game makes fantastic use of making you feel like you need to prepare. You could find a rocket launcher, and you know that you need to sacrifice a whole bunch of inventory space for it. It’s super powerful, but it doesn’t have very much ammo. Is it an acceptable trade off? Only you can decide this. Unlike games like Deus ex: Human Revolution, which handles quite similarly, this game offers you a lot but all the choices and their consequences are yours. You won’t miraculously find exactly what you need before a fight. It really is top tier stuff, I loved it.
Visuals
The visuals in the HD release are definitely HD, for the time the game was made. It is important to realize that it is a rerelease, NOT a remake. You will still see a lot of the GameCube era jank that you got back then, but the textures are all a bit nicer. That said, the 60 frames per second refresh rate, the lighting, and the character models’ updates were all welcomed and well-presented. It’s much like the Devil May Cry HD Collection.
The Story
This is a very 2000’s story. The president’s daughter has been kidnapped and you play Special Agent Leon Kennedy, a survivor from Resident Evil 2’s Raccoon City outbreak. Leon and his sexy hair must enter a strange European village and find the presidents daughter without getting stabbed by a crazed villager, or munched on by some unspeakable monster. It’s thrilling, engaging, and unique.
A fantastic game that is an absolute staple of the genre. An absolute must play by all horror fans.
Pros
- Fantastic story
- Amazing ambience
- Great gameplay
Cons
- Still has some of that “Old game Jank.”
