Road 96: Mile 0 is a single-player, adventure game done by DigixArt, which has a lot of time in the industry making very interesting games with a great narrative that tries to tell a story that will let you think for a while.

Road 96: Mile 0 is a prequel to Road 96, and it tells the story of Zoe and Kaito, in the events that happen moments before Zoe is forced to leave her house in a search of a better life.

A decaffeinated Road 96

While Road 96 was more action-based and more dynamic (as it has more characters to know, and each one had their interactions and choices), Road 96: Mile 0 is more focused on the life of Zoe while introducing Kaito, who doesn’t appear at all in the first game.

This is not a problem; It’s great that the game focuses mostly on Zoe, as she’s a critical part of all the happenings in Road 96.

Borderlands + The Walking Dead = Road 96: Mile 0

The visual aspect of the game is wacky. It seems odd and outdated; the dub seems out of place whenever you see the characters talking, and it’s not the most pleasing thing to watch. It’s understandable if you want to make a retro, first-3D-attempt-like game that feels classic as you see it, but if you want this to be a success in the market nowadays, you’ll also have to blend it with new perks, so it gets more attractive to the eye.

By far, the most annoying thing about it is that the dub is very out of place; you see mouths moving, but they don’t fit with the sounds they are trying to emit, resulting in a disturbing, wacky, and retro (in a bad way) feel.

Write Your Destiny

Road 96: Mile 0 is a choice-based game, pretty much like The Wolf Among Us, Heavy Rain, or The Walking Dead, but this one is way better because it’s not based on quick-time decisions; you have plenty of time to take your next step and this can be riskier; the more time the game lets you think, you can find yourself with many outcomes, so the game constantly lets you in a world of What Ifs that is great. It’s a unique experience.

This choice-based gameplay also lets you drive yourself into your own destiny, which is great, as the game will play with your choices to determine the personality of Zoe, and also, it has a lot of replayability value due to the lots of options, cinematics, and dialogues to discover.

If you don’t care much about the visuals, or you find them appealing for you, which is the only problem with this game, you’ll find yourself with a wonderful and enjoyable title! It’s not hard to play and it’s more of a casual thing that everyone can enjoy.

There’s no problem if you didn’t play Road 96, as it’s not needed to understand the game, but it’s recommended to have a go of that game, so you can understand the context of many things in this title.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A heartwarming, interesting, and intense story.
  • Very good gameplay that everyone in this world can enjoy.
  • Even though is part of a saga of video games, you don’t need to play the previous game to understand this one.

Cons

  • It doesn’t have the best graphics ever. It feels like all the effort fell into trying to do a top-tier story so they fell flat when giving this world some colors.
