SCORE International Baja 1000

For anyone who may not be familiar with the annual Baja 1000 event, let us inform you. This is an annual desert race that occurs across the Baja Peninsula and all the finest buddy, class 1 and truck drivers turn out in their droves to compete in this illustrious race. So it’s hardly a surprise that this event has garnered the attention of racing game developers and has warranted it’s own licenced racing game depicting the thrills and spills of desert racing. We are of course talking about Score International Baja 1000.

This Activision published title plays somewhat like another game based around this race called Baja: Edge of Control. However, it also plays similarly to other off-road racing sims such as Motorstorm, Spintires: MudRunner to name a few. However, does this game offer an off-road experience to remember, or do the wheel come off throughout? We find out in our review of Score International Baja 1000.

Hyperbolised and Juvenile

The thing that will hit you first about this title is that realism isn’t the angle that Activision went for here. Unlike other titles that aim to offer controlled and believable off-road driving physics and gameplay with its roots firmly planted in reality, this game does the opposite. The racer takes a much more arcade approach with nitrous oxide boosts included to offer an experience that is a little askew from the vibe many would have expected from a licensed title for the event.

In truth, we could have seen past this approach if the rest of the game was handled competently. However, that is far from the case. The handling of the vehicles is very poor as if they are wet bars of soap skidding across a locker room shower. There are a handful of vehicle classes to choose from but each handles worse than the last, with the dirt bike class taking the wooden spoon award for worst in the show. None of the vehicles is fun to drive and considering this is a racing game, you can see why this might be an issue.

Monotonous Muddy Racing

The game offers up a career mode that is supposed to make up for its shortcomings in the gameplay and visual departments. This consists of various tracks with different race types that test the player’s skill as an off-road driver. However, this mode also doesn’t feel like it has any substance. There are no nods to the actual real-life race, the tracks are dull and lifeless and the races don’t offer that much variety either. Worst of all though, the player is never given any motivation to continue playing this mode.

The Verdict

You have no way to upgrade your car, earn cosmetic changes or anything like that. Your reward for completing a bland and lifeless level is unlocking yet another bland and lifeless level. Repeat that eight times and there you have it, one truly underwhelming career mode.

Overall, Score International Baja 1000 is a bad racing game. Not only because it has little respect for the event it’s inspired by, or because it looks mediocre at best. It’s mostly down to the fact that the racing simply isn’t fun at all. Every race consists of wrestling with your chosen vehicle, repeating the same tired race types over again and frequently boosting your car with a turbo, taking away any tactical racing aspects that the game could have had. This game could have been a novel and well-received niche racer. However, in the end, it’s a regrettable addition to the off-road racing genre.

  • A wide variety of car types
  • Has multiplayer functionality

  • Terrible vehicle handling
  • Bland, lifeless tracks
  • Career mode is boring with no rewards for progression
