Shifters is an adventure RPG that gives amazing control over the character and the game itself. The game starts with an awesome intro video that gives you a brief idea of what you are fighting for and why. Your goal is to fight numerous amounts of evil creatures as you do your best to save the universe. Your character is a tough outcast who is called to help the people of medieval villages. You are very skilled with many weapons and have the newfound ability to shapeshift.
If you like the handling of Tomb Raider style games, then you will pick this up quickly, but if you struggle with the full control idea of a character in a 3D environment, the handling takes some getting used to. After only an hour or so of playing, I had very few struggles navigating my way around. While every single button on the controller has its own function, it is only overwhelming at first, you get used to it pretty quickly. I actually found it very easy to use after a short while. There are a few areas such as tight hallways or places with low ceilings where the camera angles and movement area bit cumbersome, but other than those very minimal spots, movements and function is great.
The graphics are outstanding on everything except what I feel counts'the character. The backgrounds are great and the textures are awesome, but the main character and his enemies are grainy and pixelated. The sound is nothing to get overly excited about, but it is very crisp and clear. After playing for roughly three hours in one sitting, you begin to wish that there were more than one song.
The levels change frequently within each section, so make sure you explore a lot. There are many secret areas and lots of helpful things along the way, so pick up everything you can find. Don't be afraid to back track and plan on spending countless hours playing. After you beat the game, you can go back through and play it as a different shapeshifted form and it's like a whole new adventure.
Shifters is an easy-to-learn, fun RPG. If you can handle the odd camera switching and occasional clipping issues, this is a great game to play. This game isn't going to be for everyone, however, so you may try a quick rental before buying.
