As one of the biggest gaming crazes for kids in the 2010s, Skylanders created a mass craze that, while dying down now, was massive for a short series of time. Skylanders quickly became a well-loved instalment in gaming for kids, and the 2014 release of Skylanders: Trap Team was a major release that was well-received at the time of release. The game was developed by Toys for Bob and Beenox and was published by Activision. How, though, did Skylanders: Trap Team manage to live up to what was already a pretty big name in the gaming industry?
A fitting part of the Skylanders world
The game follows the basic plot that you are trying to re-prison the most villainous being in the Skylands. You will be coming up against the various baddies that have been let out of the Cloudcracker Prison by Kaos. Teaming up with the Portal Master using the NFC chips on the bottom of the Skylanders: Trap Team figurines, you can play as various characters in-game and try to take on the various villains who have escaped their imprisonment.
The game forces you to be smart about who you play with and how you tackle levels depending on who you are playing as. It comes down to a various team of experts like Enigma, Thunderbolt, Tuff Luck, and Ka-Boom to try and fight back to get the villainy put back into their prisons. The game challenges you with various skill-based challenges, platforming elements, and boss fights that force you to work together, or with others, to win. The gameplay offers an interesting challenge for anyone who has played previous Skylanders titles, forcing you to round up the worst of the worst and get them put back into their prison cells – sounds easy, right?
An excellent addition for all ages
If you are a fan of previous Skylanders games – and really this is the main thing to compare Skylanders: Trap Team to – then you will probably love this. It was well-loved at release, and even today still holds up well if you can get your hands on one of its various starter packages.
You will need to get used to the various characters who all have their own styles and skills, which helps to add more variety to how you tackle the numerous challenges that exist within Skylanders: Trap Team. You control the characters by buying their little NFC toys and then connecting them to the guy with the Traptanium Portal that is included as part of any purchase.
With over 40 characters to pick from, including villains, you get a huge amount of playability to go through each level with. Overall, it offers a great choice for anyone who wants more of the same classic Skylanders experience.
Pros:
- Great depth and range of characters to pick from
- Excellent range of levels and challenges to overcome
- Ideal for kids and those who want something engrossing
Cons:
- Can be quite expensive to buy all of the various characters
