Soulworker

In a post-apocalyptic world, teenagers with “soulpowers” are battling monsters that have destroyed much of the world. This is the main theme of Soulworker, which puts you in the shoes of one of these teenagers. The game allows you to choose one of 6 gender-locked characters to play, as well as a weapon to attack monsters with.

Beautiful Artwork

Soulworker is an Anime MMORPG, and it’s immediately obvious that the backbone of its content is the fabulous artwork. The art is cell-shaded, and the characters and backgrounds are very well done. In particular, the town you start in, Rucco Town, dazzles with its pink trees and beautiful skies.

The one problem here is that while the artwork is definitely beautiful, there could be a lot more options in terms of character changes. The heart of Anime MMORPG’s is wild eye and hair colors, but the customization options for Soulworker is few and far between.

The game could be greatly improved by giving people the option for mismatched eyes, or bright green hair with spikes. Luckily, Lion Games seems to be taking steps to fix this.

Superior Sound

One area the game does very well is the voice acting for the characters. It’s entirely in Korean, and the storyline itself is cheesy, but the actors managed to take that cheesy plot and put in a great deal of personality. Even when lines are written poorly, the actors manage to convey it with the energy and tone that was meant.

Hack n’ Slash fun

Most of the game is fighting monsters, and the combat in the game is a beautiful thing to watch. Combos combine seamlessly together, and while the regular mobs are easy to kill, the bosses require some skill to defeat. Even the first boss can defeat you in just 3-4 hits, so you’ll have to hit that evade button frequently to try and avoid the worst of their hits.

The fighting is fun, but dragged down slightly by the enormous amount of grinding you have to do to get anywhere. Just to get from level 54 to 55 you will need 168 million experience! That means running the same dungeon over and over to get those points.

Steam version greatly improved from past version

Gameforge was the original publisher of the game, but not the developer. They restricted a lot of areas, and made the Western version of the game much more difficult than the Asian version. Lion Games is the developer of the game, and released it themselves, globally.

The result is a much more updated version of the game, and a very encouraging outlook for the future. It seems that many of the problems this game has had in the past will be addressed eventually, if it hasn’t been already. The game has mostly been well received, with the biggest issue so far being the servers bogged down with so many players.

8

Although the game has turned off many people through poor updates in the past, the steam rerelease is very promising. The developers have given the game a new look on life. The fresh content, new releases, and additional costumes are very promising.

Pros:

  • Developers are providing constant updates
  • Great graphics
  • Decent sound

Cons:

  • Lots of grinding
