I'm not sure about anyone else, but there feels like there are far too many games in this franchise. SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab feels like another highly scoped offering that strays away from the lightheartedness and fun-loving nature of the franchise. Games are releasing like episodes, but I could be overthinking it.
What's intriguing about SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab is that fans have been saying this game takes a dark and obscure turn from the cartoon. That concept alone is enough to pull any inquisitive players into the mix. If this is more of an ominous, cult game - perhaps it won't even need to be good for it to win some acclaim.
Driving into Dreamland
The fact that the game has very little to do with the lore and setting of the SpongeBob SquarePants instantly confirms the game's obscurity. Instead of using colorful backstories, characters, environments, and more this franchise already had - developers strangely decided to create a game set in a dream world. Perhaps it would have been too much to ask to replicate Bikini Bottom and sync gameplay there?
'SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab' features a narrative where SpongeBob, Plankton, and Patrick must conquer the wildness of their dreams to wake up and see another day. This is where the dark tones come from - there is actually the potential of being trapped in nine levels of gameplay hell! Surprisingly, there's very little to do with a creature from the Krusty Krab, but we'll let you play out the story to discover that.
Players will take on the roles of the three characters, overcoming levels of varying genres - driving, platforming, and beat 'em up. It will be a bland yet bizarre, creepy, and questionable dash to the finish line with no ultimate reward other than to say, 'what was that?'. The strangest aspect of the game is that the mechanics for each level are polished. There's nothing to argue about there. It's the execution under the vise of the SpongeBob franchise that makes it unappealing.
People tap into the SpongeBob SquarePants universe for what makes it great - the humor, the strange undersea universe, and the oddities of the Bikini Bottom lifestyle. None of those things are present in SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab. It's a cult game with characters from the show - almost something concocted on a CreepyPasta forum.
Put's You Right Off That Krabby Patty
It's just how strange SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab making it tricky to put into descriptive words. The game is stuck in a twilight zone of being too odd for series fans to enjoy, yet not good enough mechanically for keen gamers to have a whack. That leaves a subsector of players that admire the obscure things in life. That is the audience that could enjoy the game.
It's a while since I've seen a TV game that's strayed so much from the foundations. Maybe The Simpsons arcade game? But even that managed to put some entertaining spin on its weird series twist. So, I've mentioned who could possibly enjoy this game. I guess that's really all that can be said!
- Cult value in the game straying away from its foundations
- Polished mechanics that spread across multiple genres
- Although different, the visuals are pretty good
- The game won't appease many fans of the SpongeBob SquarePants series
- The narrative is strange and doesn't piece together well
- Every level doesn't provide much of a challenge
