The long-awaited day for franchise fans has finally arrived after what's seemingly been an endless series of delays. The narrative-based Star Trek: Resurgence finally hits our consoles to take advantage of the rich series lore and deliver a cinematic experience on video games. The standards and expectations are high for this release, not only because of the development time but the masterminds behind the game.

Star Trek: Resurgence wants to follow suit in its namesake, injecting new life into a series that has been eroding in popularity for a while. Who better to do that than a dev team with an illustrious history of delivering narrative-based games? Any fan could be excited about the prospect of a great story, challenging decisions, and an inspired cast. Will this be the game to resurge the franchise?

Beam Me Up, Snotty

One feels more of a relief that Star Trek: Resurgence is taking the series back to its roots through the medium of a video game. It's a dialogue-heavy narrative that tells a story of more than just adventuring in the universe, where the cast of crew's minor actions and thoughts can have a colossal impact on what happens. In short, a fan can feel more soul in the universe than in other franchise games.

Star Trek: Resurgence is heavily based on the ship, set after the events of The Next Generation, forging a new adventure with a new crew, old favorites, and many chapters compounding outcomes on a vast number of decisions you make. Navigating dialogue trees will be the game's core mechanic, where the writers have done an excellent job of keeping conversation thrilling.

However, there's more to it, adding a decent mix of gameplay variation. Players will enjoy phaser combat, puzzle solving, and flying shuttles as they continue through this more scoped, meaningful adventure. Revealing anything about the storyline won't do our critique any justice here. Still, as you can imagine, a veteran working on a storyline means there's something to behold!

The personalities, lore, mechanics, and setting all combine to provide an epic experience with hardly a dull moment. The visuals may not be up to the highest standard. However, one could easily forgive that aspect when immersed in the world's intricacies. It's fascinating how such an impactful environment is created in such a small space and how Star Trek: Resurgence achieves its job of reinvigorating the series.

Warp Speed Ahead

Did we end Star Trek: Resurgence satisfied? Yes, we did. It has all the typical flair and excitement of a Telltale game, now brought to the Star Trek universe to get up close and personal with the lore and find an inspired dynamic, even for those who no little about the series. Without question, it's got all the same elements as what made The Walking Dead a story-based experience to remember.

Anyone skeptical of Star Trek before can walk into the game and enjoy it unscathed. It's simply a well-designed, immersive narrative that will satisfy you regardless of your choices or how much you know about the universe. It's a valiant attempt at rekindling a franchise, and it's paid off.
