Surviving the Abyss

Welcome, deep sea traveler, to Surviving the Abyss. Set on Earth in 1976, you are tasked with managing a cloning facility on the sea floor. Its up to you to explore the darkness beneath, expand the facility and hold back to unseen horrors that hide in the dark around you. If you are looking for a tense game that offers a lot of engaging gameplay, then you have come to the right place. If you don’t already have a fear of the unknown depths of the ocean, this brilliant title will ensure you do when you’re done with it. Let’s jump on in.

Gameplay

So, the majority of this game has you choosing where buildings go and making sure you have all the resources necessary to continue production. There are a few things that can get in your way here, primarily the spooky things in the dark, but your biggest enemy is easily poor planning. You need to be switched on from start to finish here or you will encounter a situation where you lock yourself out from progressing, and that’s no good.

This game largely focuses on keeping everything in the light, and everything that isn’t in the light, specifically monsters, out of the light and away from your stuff. Although it may share some similarities in regards to its delivery as games like They Are billions, it definitely has its own take on the formula. There is less of a focus on tower defense, and more of one on ensuring you keep the lights on. For when the lights go out, the monsters will break your stuff and potentially damage something very important. It’s a bit more like Surviving Mars.

For a resource management game, the developers have really gone for something unique here that I really enjoy.

Visuals

Arguably, the standout aspect of this game is its visuals. I will admit, hand on heart, these are some of the best visuals I’ve ever seen in a game like this. The way the developers used lighting is utterly brilliant, as they perfectly capture the ‘spooky’ atmosphere of being deep underwater. Wherever the light isn’t shining is almost pitch black thanks to the crushing depths, and when the monsters start reaching for you from the inky blackness. Oh, good lord, it gives you the heebie-jeebies like few other things can. The way they move is so satisfyingly off-putting, you are going to have to go check it out.

The attention to detail on the building pieces and environments are stunning. It gives off the same kind of vibe that the first BioShock had, neon lights, underwater aesthetic and big contained buildings.

Music and Sound Design

The music in this title is brilliantly crafted, as it really lends to the creepy mechanical sound that makes this whole game feel like it somehow has the absence of life in it. Like this isn’t a game that inspires people to build a new life on mars, but to survive in a hostile environment that is as unforgiving as a place can get.

8

A fantastic title that offers a lot to fans of resource management games, and if you like one that’s spooky, then you couldn’t get better than this.

Pros

  • Great visuals that really capture what it would be like to live down there. Especially their use of lighting
  • Excellent music and sound design
  • Fresh and interesting take on a resource management game

Cons

  • A couple of glitches and bugs that will likely be ironed out soon

Game Reviews

Surviving the Abyss is one of the most exciting survival/management sims to be released this year. As I write this, what we have here is a game that is in early access, but I am so interested in this game, I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you guys and hopefully get a few of you more excited about it. Keep in mind that there is more coming to the game than I am talking about today, but even in the early access state here, you have a lot to sink your teeth into.

The Cold War Just Got Colder

I am very excited about the whole narrative that holds Surviving the Abyss together. The game takes place in the late 70s and we have been tasked with leading a research facility at the bottom of the ocean that is looking into human cloning. As you would expect, things at the bottom of the ocean are very deadly and you will have your hands full as you try to keep people safe, but also complete your mission.

The Horrors Of The Deep!

Before, I get into the actual gameplay of Surviving the Abyss, I have to talk about the dangers of the bottom of the ocean. Clearly, drowning and things going wrong with the base are stuff you have to contend with, however, it is very dark on the bottom of the ocean, and keeping the lights on is right up there with having enough oxygen for your people! You see, in the dark, there are monstrous sea creatures that want you dead and if the lights go out, they will attack. If you move a bit further out to find new resources and it is dark, they will attack! It makes for a very tense experience.

Building It To Last

One of the parts of Surviving the Abyss that I am most into is the whole base building. At first, you just need to make sure you have a safe and functioning base where your crew can live and work. However, expanding your base not just with new parts that can help you learn new technologies and complete your missions. But with stuff that will help keep your people sane as well. If you just work your crew to death, they may start to become not as obedient and that can be disastrous. There is a real sense of progression in this game and while you will be working to keeping people alive, you always feel like you are just one step away from that next big breakthrough.

Explore The Darkness!

Remember how we just talked about the monsters that live in the dark? Well, Surviving the Abyss forces you out of your comfort zone and to explore further and further out in order to find new special flora that lives in the depths of the ocean. It is a real risk and reward system as if you send people too far out, they may not come back! You can use submarines and build outposts to try and help with your exploration and resource gathering.

I feel that for you guys that love simulation, survival, management, and building style games, Surviving the Abyss ticks all of the boxes for what makes a great game of this style. I think that there is a lot of depth to the gameplay here, but from what I have seen so far, it does a great job at easing the player in and teaching them as they go. The whole being on the ocean floor setting of the game along with the cold war setting is also another aspect of the game that is very attractive to me.

Pros:

  • I love how you are on the ocean floor
  • The monsters hiding in the dark make things very tense
  • You always feel like you are moving forward in the game
  • I like the whole building and research aspect the game has going on

Cons:

  • Not sure how long it will be until the game is fully complete
  • I hope that there is a good variety of monsters in the game
