The Doors Of Trithius is a really fun and old-school inspired rogue like RPG that had me hooked and I have always been checking for the next update! Now, this game as I write this review is in early access so that is something we have to take into consideration. However, even in this early access state, the game has a lot of content for you to experience and no two playthroughs will ever be exactly the same.

Enalia, How I Hardly Knew You

While The Doors Of Trithius is an RPG, it is not as story driven as you would think. It takes place in a randomly generated fantasy world called Enalia and you kind of make up your own stories as you go and get invested in the various quests that do give you bits of the story. In all, it has a very old-school vibe about it and that is something I actually see as a positive. The game has this very cool retro look to it, it kind of reminds me of a game that I would have played on my PC back in the 90s.

The Ever Changing World

What really drew me to this game was the randomly generated nature of it. Granted having randomly generated levels is common in rogue like games, but The Doors Of Trithius is completely randomly generated! Not just the levels and dungeons, but the world map, towns, dungeons, quests, and everything else. Each experience is a new adventure and that was something I got a real kick out of. Some sessions would be filled with epic loot and be a breeze, others would be brutally difficult! Now knowing what you were going to get was something I found very appealing.

A Whole Lot Of Customization

As you would expect, The Doors Of Trithius allows you to create your own character. There are seven different character backgrounds and then you have over 30 character traits that you can use. This is a game where your progression is driven to make your character better. From better gear, leveling up, new skills, passive abilities, and so on. You always feel like you are on the way to getting something to make yourself better. There is also a crafting mechanic in the game where you can make your own potions, and food as well as upgrade your gear with the resources you find on your adventure.

Time After Time

The combat system in The Doors Of Trithius is quite interesting in that it is time based. Combat is not all that deep if I am being honest, but I liked how the quicker you were at selecting what you want to do, the more it felt like you were rewarded. I have heard some people say that on some runs combat can be basic, but that to me just ties into the random nature of everything this game has going on. There are plenty of weapons and abilities so you can really create a character that suits your playstyle.

I am a huge fan of rogue like RPGs and this is one of the better examples of that genre out there. I know that the game is not yet complete, but I have a feeling that once the developer gets all they want into the game, this could be a 9/10 game for me. I love the random nature of everything and it is just a very addictive game to play. If you are like me and enjoy rogue like RPGs, you have to put some time into this one!

Pros:

Even in the early access state, there is a lot to do
This is one of the most “random” games I have ever played
You always want to go on just one more run
I liked how you could be so specific with your character

Cons:

As I write this there has not been a significant update for a while
If rogue like RPGs do not usually do anything for you, you may struggle to get into this
