There are some games that feel like they were made for me specifically and The Fermi Paradox is one of those games. This is a sci-fi strategy game where you play as a galactic gardener, someone who can influence many civilizations that are at every end of the galaxy. I get for some people the thought of a game that is pretty much a 4X grand strategy game if I am being honest like this is not fun, but for me and those of you who love this kind of thing, this is the kind of game where you can spend a very long time playing god!
Taking Care Of The Universe
The idea of The Fermi Paradox is that you are a galactic gardener, in the universe, there are many different kinds of civilizations spread out all over the place. There are humans, horse people, lizard people, tree people, weird fish things, and a ton more. The idea is that you want to try and help these civilizations move forward and prosper, but that is easier said than done as you also have to help put them into contact with each other.
Taking A Step Back
You may think that you are in direct control of all these civilizations, but that is not the case at all. You watch them move forward through time and when a major event is about to happen be it one that can move them forward or some kind of disaster, you get to step in and shape the way things happen. For example, one race may discover a new technology, will they use this to enlighten themselves or use it as a weapon to invade other planets?
You have this currency in The Fermi Paradox called, synthis that you have to work with and you cannot just go select paths willy nilly and using it all up. What you decide for one planet may have dire consequences for another. For example, I had the humans make contact with a race of “peaceful” creatures only for them to go to the planet and pretty much kill everything on sight!
Every Action Has A Reaction
The whole “paradox” thing here is not a joke, the number of times I thought a race was on the right track only to use up all their natural resources or cause irreversible climate change was through the roof! It is a real learning experience each time you make a decision and as there are so many different outcomes, I would wager each time you play the game, something different will happen.
Synthwave Blue
The presentation of The Fermi Paradox is very appealing. Each race is very well designed and while the screen showing you the universe is not exactly eye-catching, as a whole this is the kind of game that is very easy to “look at” I think this is good as if you get fully invested in the game, you will be looking at it for a very long time. It also has this very synthwave kind of vibe to the music that really gets into your soul and fits the game perfectly.
I have to say that The Fermi Paradox is the kind of game that is not for everyone, but I really enjoyed my time with the early access version of the game. It has a ton for you to do and the whole sci-fi setting and the fact I get to play as this intergalactic being that can shape various civilizations' destiny is something I found to be really cool.
Pros:
- There are many different civilizations
- Each time you play the game, outcomes will be different
- It is the kind of game that is very addictive
- Making choices really does feel like the fate of an entire race is in the palm of your hand
Cons:
- Like any strategy game, the learning curve is pretty steep
- You really need to be into sci-fi to get fully invested
