What we have here with Dark Deity is a very deep turn-based strategy RPG that has picked up a lot of steam leading up to its release. I will say right off the bat, if you are looking for a casual kind of gaming experience, this game is not for you. Still, with that being said, this game has a ton of stuff for you to dig into and it is certainly going to keep you busy for a long time.
High School Fantasy?
I have to be honest and say that the story Dark Deity is telling is very hard to describe. The game is set in the world of Terrazael and this place is on the brink of an all-out war. The plot of the game has these four graduates from the prestigious Brookstead Academy having their graduation sped up by the king to try and fight for him.
This is a game that has a ton of characters and there is a lot of interaction between the various characters. I find this very impressive, but it does also mean that this is the kind of game you have to really pay attention to as you play it.
A Deep Campaign!
There are 28 chapters to play through in the campaign and the turn-based nature of the gameplay is what makes Dark Deity a real thinking person's kind of game. Each chapter has plenty of missions for you to get into and these different combat scenarios will certainly test your skills as you always have to think of the fly as you never know what your enemy is going to throw your way. I think it is really cool the way that the battles take place on an old-school 2D style plain.
A Masterclass Of Characters!
There are a phenomenal 54-character classes in the game! That is a lot to get into and each class has its own abilities, skills, and so on. Characters are a huge part of the game, not just because there are so many of them, but you can have a lot in your party and they each have their own relationships that will grow or deteriorate as you progress through the campaign. As well as having a lot of characters, there are a ton of weapons in the game too, not to mention these ancient artifacts that you can find which can grant you new abilities.
A Slick Retro Style On The Battlefield
I love the way Dark Deity has a retro style when you are playing the game. At first, there is a grid-based system that looks like something you would find on the Super Nintendo. The battle sections have this very high-quality 16-bit look to them too which I love. The story unfolds via these beautiful cinematics that have a very stylish anime look to them which helps you get more into the game.
I have to say that Dark Deity is the kind of game that is not going to be for everyone. If you enjoy turn-based tactics RPGs that have a ton of characters for you to manage, you will be in heaven here. It is a game that demands a great deal from the player, but it also gives you a lot of enjoyment for your time and effort.
