Patron is a city building game that is trying to stand out from the crowd by offering a much more complex social aspect to the gameplay. Currently, the game is not yet complete, but there is a free demo out there and from what I can tell the game is going to be released towards the latter half of 2021. If you are into city builders, then I think this game could be just what you are looking for.
Your Civilization Is The Story
I would not come into Patron expecting some kind of huge and epic story if I were you. Most city builders do not focus on the story and I do not see this one being any different.
I think the social aspect of the game is going to be what really makes the player strike a connection to the people they are looking after. It sounds pretty interesting how there will be different social groups that you have to look after. You can never keep everyone happy, but trying to use politics and build various things and helping people out is going to be what keeps them happy. This is one city building game where the personality of your people is actually going to play a part in how you decide to design your settlement.
Building For The Future
It flat out states on the Steam page for Patron that they are building on the staples of the city building genre and I do not mind that one bit. This means that you start off with pretty much nothing and have to build up your civilization. You of course need to build homes for your people, but farms, manufacturing plants, and so on are essential for moving forward.
The game moves through time so you have to move with the times also and you can do this by researching and this will give you access to more modern things to move your society forward. You have to listen to your people and get a sense of what they want, you do this and they will be happy… well some of them will. One aspect that I like is that building things like parks and so on will be one of the things that make the people happier.
Of course, Patron is not all fun and games and at some point, your settlement is certainly going to suffer some hardships. There are seasons in this game and you have to adapt for them and work towards them in many ways to make sure that you are prepared. However, there are also various tragedies that can strike such as fires, tornados, and brutal winters that can threaten to wipe out everything you have worked for!
If you enjoy city building games then I think Patron is going to be something that you can have a lot of fun with. I do not think they are trying to reinvent the wheel here with this game, but they have instead focused on building a solid city builder and just made sure to incorporate all of the things that are known to make this genre work and work very well.

- It may be playing things a tad too safe
- Some of your people are just flat-out jerks and nothing will make them happy!
