Games set in space are not a new idea by any stretch. We have seen just about every genre tackle a game outside our atmosphere. We have seen horrors, space operas and FPS masterclasses that have captivated gamers. However, we are sure you will admit that we aren’t exactly coming down with multiplayer team games set in space. Well, This Means Warp aims to tackle this problem head on and fill the gap with a frantic Rogue like Co-op space game with family fun written all over it.
This game plays similarly to games like FTL: Faster Than Light, Worms, Moving Out, Overcooked and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. This game looks like a love letter to frantic co-op games of the past decade while still adding a twist in the form of a roguelike format which has become rather popular in the last year thanks to games like Hades or Returnal. We see how this game shapes up in our preview of This Means Warp.
Intergalactic Insanity
Firstly, lets begin with the visuals on offer. While they are cartoonish, silly and serve the theme of the game well. They aren’t exactly remarkable by any stretch. They aren’t one million miles away from the category of ‘my first unity game’ but we don’t mean that in a harsh way. We simply mean that the team has poured all their time into the gameplay on show here and truthfully, it was the best decision they could have made.
The gameplay on show here is something to behold. It combines the repetitive and self driven narrative of FTL with the frantic and fast paced gameplay that you would find in games like Overcooked or the Fat Princess series. Culminating to offer one of the most intriguing indie multiplayer experiences you will likely encounter this year.
The game will have you team up with 1-4 players and manage your ship. Completing maintenance, making upgrades and dealing with space pirates in a procedurally generated world which urges the player to explore, survive and thrive in the hostile vacuum that is space. This game is set to drop this year and we can’t wait to see what this one has in store for us.
The Verdict
Overall, we think this game is limited by the genre that it attempts to get involved in. Co-op games of this nature are a dime a dozen. However, this one seems to have something about it that may see it float to the top of the pile. The roguelike format, the FTL inspired gameplay and the sheer chaos on screen will be enough to attract more than a few to this game.
So if you want to see what this game has to offer, be ready to shoot for the stars sometime this year.
Pros:
- Chaotic multiplayer fun
- Rogue like format is a nice touch
Cons:
- Doesn’t seem to offer much narrative
- Graphics are mediocre
