The Last Case of Benedict Fox

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is an upcoming action-adventure game that blends elements of Metroidvania, noir, and Lovecraftian horror. The game follows Benedict Fox, a self-proclaimed detective who is bound to a demon companion. Together, they must explore the memories of deceased victims in search for clues and uncover the secrets of an old mansion where a couple was murdered and their child has gone missing.

Memory Exploration

One of the main features of The Last Case of Benedict Fox is the ability to enter the consciousness of the dead and explore their memories in search for clues. Each memory is a surreal world where emotions, traumas, and secrets take on a physical form. The player will have to navigate these worlds using their platforming skills and puzzle-solving abilities.

The memory exploration mechanic is reminiscent of games like Psychonauts or Inception, where the player can manipulate the environment and discover hidden aspects of the characters' personalities. The game promises to offer a variety of memory worlds with different themes and challenges.

Demon Combat

Another feature of The Last Case of Benedict Fox is the combat system that involves using weapons, demon powers, and environmental objects to fight enemies. The game features demons, monsters, and cultists as foes that will try to stop Benedict from solving his last case.

The combat system is inspired by games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, where the player can use stylish moves and combos to defeat enemies. The player can also use their demon companion's abilities to enhance their attacks or perform special actions.

The game also encourages creativity and experimentation in combat by allowing the player to use objects in the environment as weapons or traps. For example, the player can throw barrels at enemies or set them on fire with candles.

Burton-esque Art Style

One of the most striking aspects of The Last Case of Benedict Fox is its art style that combines elements of Burton-esque gothic aesthetics with Lovecraftian cosmic horror. The game features dark and gloomy environments that contrast with colorful and whimsical memory worlds.

The game also draws inspiration from noir pulp fiction and early 20th-century jazz music for its story and atmosphere. The game aims to create a dark yet intriguing world full of secret organizations, forbidden rituals, and cold-blooded crimes.

Review: 8/10

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is an ambitious game that offers a unique blend of Metroidvania gameplay with noir storytelling and Lovecraftian horror. The game has a lot of potential to deliver a captivating experience that will appeal to fans of action-adventure games with a twist.

However, the game also faces some challenges such as balancing its different gameplay elements, creating memorable characters and scenarios, and polishing its technical aspects. The game is still in development and has not been released yet so it remains to be seen how well it will execute its vision.

  • Stylish demon combat system
  • Burton-esque art style

Game Reviews

We are in for a spooky treat today as we take a closer look at The Last Case of Benedict Fox! I have been excited about this game for a while now and while as I write this the release date is still a little way away, I wanted to take a look at this game and hopefully get a few more of you guys excited to put on your supernatural demon infused detective hat to try and solve this grisly and haunting mystery!

A Family With Demons!

The plot of the game is something that has me very, very interested. It has a kind of gothic feel to it and as the title, The Last Case of Benedict Fox suggests, we play as a man called Benedict Fox who is a detective. In a creepy old mansion, he is investigating the brutal murder of a husband and wife whose daughter has also gone missing. From the demonic cultists to the actual demons! There is a lot standing in the detective’s way from finding the truth!

Looking Into Their Soul

One of the coolest aspects of The Last Case of Benedict Fox is that you are not alone! You yourself have a demon companion and you can use this demon to dive into the memories of people who have died. Seeing their memories manifest as a real place is very, very cool! You have to find a “testimony” before you can leave and it is honestly one of the coolest aspects of the game for me. It adds a whole new level to the gameplay and also kicks the creepy factor up several notches.

Metroid-Spooky-Vania

The gameplay on offer in this game is that of a classic Metroidvania style of game. You have this large mansion (and people's minds) to explore and there are a multitude of tricky puzzles for you to solve. The Last Case of Benedict Fox has you needing to use your various abilities and smarts as well as the information you learn along the way to progress through the game. The combat system is also something that I am very interested in. You will have to fight off these cultists and demons as you progress through the story and while you can fight them yourself, you do also have these demonic abilities that you can use as well. Tough, but fun I feel is the best way to look at this!

You Had Me At Hello

Have you ever read the description of a game and it has pulled you in and sold you on it right away? That was what happened with me and The Last Case of Benedict Fox. They described the setting of the game as a “fantastical Lovecraftian Metroidvania” and that right there had me sold. The gothic look of the game is truly awesome and for a game that is all in 2D, it has some of the creepiest atmosphere I have seen in a game in quite some time. I love the creature designs and the way the artists were able to flex those creative muscles with the parts of the game where you jump into people’s memories is cool.

The more I see and read about The Last Case of Benedict Fox, the more excited I get for this game. Three have been many Metroidvania style games released in the last year or so, but I feel that this one has pretty much everything that I want in a game of this style. It has a gothic horror style story, an interesting protagonist, and very intriguing gameplay too! Be sure to keep a close eye on this one!

Pros:

  • I love the story that is being told in this game
  • The whole Lovecraftian Metroidvania thing it has going on is awesome
  • The game looks challenging, but also fun
  • I love the presentation

Cons:

  • Metroidvania games are not everyone’s cup of tea
  • Will some of the puzzles perhaps be a tad too cryptic?
