In computer games, the theme of the confrontation between man and gods is often raised. Usually the action of such projects unfolds in fantasy universes or in the distant past. However, there are some notable exceptions. The game Too Human colorfully combines science fiction and Scandinavian mythology. Even fourteen years after its release, this project is winning the hearts of new users.

Welcome to the divine world

Too Human is a mix of action, RPG and action-adventure genres. The game was developed by the Canadian studio Silicon Knights. It has given the world Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and X-Men: Destiny. The same team took part in the creation of other well-known products for various platforms, including GameCube. The game is promoted and distributed by Microsoft.

Most of the critics consider Too Human to be a Hack'n'Slash RPG, although technically it is an action-adventure game from the third person. The developers themselves have repeatedly said that they were inspired by such iconic series as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy when making the game. They wanted to create a huge cinematic universe with an unusual setting, non-linear narrative, wide possibilities and an open world. In part, they succeeded.

Well-known myths with a new twist

The game is set in the distant future. People, gods and cybernetic organisms are trying to get along on Earth. The main character is Baldur, son of the great Odin. He works for the police and takes on the investigation of a series of bloody murders. As a result, the guy finds himself in the middle of a tangled story. And his main aim becomes the end of the long-lasting war between the gods and the machines.

There are dozens of characters from the Norse-Germanic mythology in the game. These are Loki, Freya, Thor, Bragi and other deities. That's just like Baldur itself, they are presented in a completely different way, not as fans of ancient legends are used to seeing them.

Advantages and disadvantages

The project attracts users with many things. First and foremost is:

• An unusual setting, combining science fiction and Germanic-Scandinavian mythology
• Huge open world available for exploration
• Fascinating plot and unusual characters that are created on the basis of legendary heroes of myths
• Hundreds of interesting quests
• Impressive elaboration of details

However, the game also had significant flaws. Users and critics did not like:

• The drawn-out cutscenes
• Unfamiliar controls, particularly aiming
• Complicated combat mechanics
• The lack of multiplayer
