You need to check out Tunnel of Doom if you like rogue like games that are heavy on the action. I know the term “rogue like” has been done to death at this point, but what we have here with this game is something that is trying to be its own thing in the genre. It has a cool story and premise to it and I really like the visuals of this game. In all, it is one of the more impressive looking games in this genre.
I Will Save My Husband!
The story of the game is very interesting in that instead of saving the damsel in distress, it is flipped. In Tunnel of Doom, we play as a dedicated wife called Angel. Her husband was working in the mine when the mines were all shut down, leaving her husband inside.
She decides to head into the mine herself to save him and find out what is going on. She finds out that this mine is full of monsters and she needs to make sure she gets to her husband in time.
Setting Traps and Cracking Skulls
The gameplay of Tunnel of Doom is very interesting. To start with, it is always randomized so you never know what layout you are going to get, what monsters there will be, and so on. You get to set various traps before a wave starts and this can help you out greatly. The thing is, while this makes it sound like a tower defense style of game that is not actually the case. It has elements of it, but you are free to move around and attack as well, it is like the traps you set are there to help you rather than be your sole source of defending yourself.
Getting Better As You Go
As you make your way through the mine, you can improve yourself to make things “easier” for you. Tunnel of Doom has plenty of loot that you can get which you can use to build weapons, ammo and make new traps to help you out. There are also perks that you can find which can give you various buffs to help you along your journey. You always want to progress as you never know for sure what the next room will have for you if you can survive.
The Legend of Angel
I love the style of Tunnel of Doom. It is done in a high-quality pixel art style that looks like something from the 32-bit era. I like this as it reminds me of games like Alundra and if you want to go back a generation, Link to the Past.
Things are nice and detailed and the sprite work and the animation of the game are done very well. It has a very cool charm to it all that I found very appealing right from the start.
Even if you have played a million games that describe themselves as rogue-like, Tunnel of Doom is still a game that is very much worth your time. I think the story of the game is one of the more interesting stories I have come across in a game like this. Add to that the mixture of combat and tower defense style gameplay and you have a game that is very fun to play, challenging, and also kind of special in what it is doing.
