First-person shooters have been the biggest and most popular genre in the gaming world for as long as they've existed. Something is thrilling and exciting in playing a game like this, where you're in the perspective of the character, and you're constantly in tension and action. Nowadays they are still going as hard as ever, and it's really hard to choose one to really call the best. But if you go back in time to the year 1999, there was only one real option for this. We are talking about Unreal Tournament GOTY, quite possibly the coolest and biggest game of the year, which earned it its title as Game Of The Year. But what is this game all about? And, is it really as good as they all say? Well, let's talk about it.

About the game

As far as game modes go, Unreal Tournament GOTY has five main game modes, and each has their unique rules, these modes are:

  • Deathmatch: As the name implies, it's a free for all death battle. There are no teams, each one is to defend themselves, the winner will be the player who reaches the required amount of eliminations first. This model also has two variables:
  • Team Death: The objective of reaching the required amount of eliminations is still present here, but this time it’s a team effort. Two or more teams can participate in this mode.
  • Last Man Standing: Similar to a normal deathmatch, but now there are lives enabled. This means that now we don't have unlimited respawns.

  • Domination: Two teams, there are no bases, but there are three Control Points in different locations of the Arena. When touching a Control Point it becomes ours, and we must defend it at all costs, every second counts. The team that has more time in possession of the three Control Points wins.

  • Capture The Flag: Two teams, each with its own fortified Base and Flag. The objective is clear: capture the enemy flag and bring it home as a trophy, without dropping it. Simple? Whoever captures the flag, cannot shoot to defend himself (Run, Forrest! Run!).

  • Assault: Two turns, in the first one, one team must defend the base in which it is fortified, and the other, attack until the base is conquered. Then the roles are reversed. If the base was conquered in the first turn, the conquered team must achieve it in less time than the rival. If the base was NOT conquered in the first turn, just by managing to take it, it is already considered a victory.

  • Challenge: It could be considered the Story Mode. In it, the player faced the Champions, after going through all the game modes, ending in a one-on-one battle with the resident Champion, the fearsome cyborg Xan Kriegor.

A real game of the year

It was the direct competitor of Quake III Arena, and although that one is well remembered, it has no way to compete against Epic's game. UT1, UT Classic, UT99, UT: GOTY, or whatever you prefer to call it, has only one qualification, and it is SUPERIOR.

It has better mobility, better AI, a secondary shooting mode for each of the weapons, and so on. And those mentioned are just some of the features that define it as a completely unique game within its kind.

In its time it was one of the most innovative deliveries. An enormous configuration capacity, giving rise to a "custom" personalization. It had Assault, Capture the Flag and Last Man Standing modes, which survived through time.

9.5

Back in 1999, it was clearly the best game of the year. With so many innovations, hardcore gameplay, intense combats, and just so much action. It was really a game straight from the dreams of action junkies all over the world.

Pros:

  • Intense gameplay
  • Solid mechanics
  • Innovative modes

Cons:

  • Some level design issues
