Have you ever played a game and felt like the AI might know your every move moments before you do it? That gaming nightmare becomes a reality in the quirky platformer Will You Snail? In this game, a rogue AI becomes your worst enemy as you both try to predict each other’s movements in a fast-paced platformer where you relent control to the whims of the computer.
The game’s unique neon palette and its adaptive difficulty make it one of the most original platforming games we’ve seen in a while. Will You Snail promises a lot, and it seems like it knows its target audience quite well — but how good will the game be when it finally releases? Let’s take a quick look at some of the most promising aspects of this peculiar game.
Predict and Adapt
Will You Snail is not like most platforming games out there. While the norm for this genre seems to be navigating increasingly difficult levels filled to the brim with enemies and traps, this title takes delight in creating custom levels that will challenge your reflexes at every step of the way.
You play as a snail in a neon world that seems like it was pulled straight out of Geometry Wars. As you navigate the seemingly empty levels, you’ll notice that the AI suddenly makes some slight changes to the scenery to stop your progress. Things like spikes coming out of nowhere and massive enemies suddenly materializing are just par for the course in Will You Snail.
In a move that’s similar to what we saw in Valve’s outstanding “Director” AI in games like Left 4 Dead, the computer in Will You Snail adapts to your skill level — and is always ready to throw challenges at you according to how well you’re doing in the game.
There are also some optional puzzles along the way that you can try to solve to discover some meaning behind the madness that’s unfolding in Will You Snail. If you’re a fan of games that deal with the dangers of AI — or sci-fi comedies like Portal 2 — then this game might be right up your alley.
Neon Snails
Though visually simplistic by choice, Will You Snail still features some impressively groovy visuals. The neon-lit atmosphere of the game makes it feel like a lost voxel-based game from a bygone era of gaming, even though the satisfying particle effects will soon remind you that this is pretty much a game made in 2022.
As mentioned before, one of the most refreshing things to see when it comes to how Will You Snail approaches its target audience it’s how sincere the developers seem to be when addressing the kind of player that might enjoy this quirky game.
It’s safe to say that Will You Snail’s humor and themes might not be appealing to everyone, but that’s just where the magic of the project resides.
If you’re a fan of quirky sci-fi comedies that also deal with some complex themes about AI, futurology, and the destiny of mankind — then, by all means, give this one a go.
Will You Snail? Is a quirky platformer that delivers the perfect amount of thrills and innovation.
