A Game of Thrones: The Board Game

It's only natural that you'll see a broad series of video games emerge when a television series because one of the world's most talked about things. After all, the potential of something with plenty of lore, a rich narrative, and an expansive fantasy world begs for playable media. A Game of Thrones: The Board Game combines the franchise's physical and digital potential into a tabletop experience.

A point worth mentioning is that we haven't seen a hellishly good game from this franchise yet, bar one or two exceptions. That's led to some skepticism that A Game of Thrones: The Board Game might be a feeble attempt to milk the current popularity of the series. But that doesn't hinder the fact that there are still high expectations, given the possibilities developers have to work with. Let's see the outcome.

Taking the Table Throne

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is a digital adaptation of a tabletop game that already exists, meaning there's no need to throw any originality into the mix. The developer's job here is to build an experience that flawlessly adapts to the digital environment, making it immersive and palatable to a group of fussy, meticulous players. So how well is the digital version executed?

Going into the game without knowing how to play, I'll say, pretty well. The game's core mechanics is that up to six players choose one of the great houses of the Seven Kingdoms, aiming to conquer a set number of cities and strongholds as a condition for victory. Players will draw cards, each turning over ten rounds, where they must efficiently overcome the task and win as many places on the board as possible.

Overall, the developers have done a mighty fine job translating the board game into an immersive experience. The visuals, albeit subdued, perfectly fit the game themes and settings, supplementing gameplay with a more intuitive interface for those not up to speed with tabletop games. A few added features, such as leaderboards and an ELO ranking system, make the multiplayer gameplay more intriguing.

Even though A Game of Thrones: The Board Game isn't original, the gameplay is more solid and entertaining than most titles in the series. Even those without a clue how to play tabletop games can enjoy this experience, walking you through the basics seamlessly, leading up to you want to compete for hours.

Never Board

It's odd to think that a digital version of a tabletop game could ultimately be one of the best titles in a series. However, playing A Game of Thrones: The Board Game, you'll have trouble arguing that it's one of the best franchise video games out there. Think of the immersion of Civilization put into Westeros, and you'll have a definition of the experience.
