Angry Birds Go

Kart racing is an extremely popular game style, and in Angry Birds Go, you can take your favorite characters on a karting adventure all their own. This sleek and fast little game launches you from a slingshot, after which you’ll be doing your best to take advantage of a downhill slope to get ahead.

Each bird has their own unique special ability which can give them an edge during the game. You start out with the red bird and learn the ropes of the game through a fairly friendly tutorial race.

Freemium woes

Like all the Angry Birds series, Angry Birds Go relies on a shop to generate income. In the original Angry Birds, this didn’t affect overall gameplay very much. In Angry Birds Go, it’s a lot more annoying. Each bird can only run 5 races before needing to recharge, and you only have a bird or two to start with.

This means a lot of waiting at the beginning of the game—unless you pay for more time. There’s nothing wrong with earning money from your game or having a freemium game, but the way Angry Birds Go went around it was poor form and very annoying.

Replaying the same track gets old

Part of the fun of a racing kart simulation is trying new tracks. While Angry Birds Go does have a generous number of different tracks to fly down, you’ll have to replay the same track a huge number of times to meet the qualifications to unlock a new track.

This can get old and repetitive very quickly, but if you do like mastering a new track before moving on you may find this enjoyable. The game of course, allows you to spend crystals to meet the minimum requirements to upgrade your vehicle instead of grinding the same track forever, but you need to pay for those.

Decent graphics and gameplay

If you’re willing to give into the freemium nature of the game, or simply don’t mind waiting a long time to be able to play, the game does have a lot to offer. This is Angry Bird’s first time in 3D, and it made the transition well. The game offers you two options for how to make it around curves in the path, including both the ability to tilt and turn. You can use either to make it down the slope, depending entirely on your preference.

The game feels natural and moves predictably. The actual gameplay itself is similar to Mario Kart 64 and other popular older karting games.

Angry Birds Go has a lot going for it. It is extremely colorful, and beautiful to look at. It also has great gameplay that makes playing fun. Unfortunately, the game is set up in such a way that the game is not really enjoyable unless you pay for crystals to make the game less grindy.

This really drags down the overall enjoyability of the game, and makes it feel like a greedy money grab rather than a fun game.

Pros:

  • Beautiful graphics
  • Decent gameplay

Cons:

  • Freemium forces you to pay or wait endlessly
