Game Reviews

If you fancy yourself as somewhat hard-headed this game is for you. Evil King Drool has kidnapped the Dragon Princess, Za. It's 10,000 B.C. and you are Bonk the Caveman! Due to a lack of weapons you're going to have to use your head to get Za back--literally! It's tough going in this prehistoric world of deserts, volcanos, tropical forests, dinosaurs and other unpleasant monsters. Battle off the bad guys with well-aimed head butts. When in doubt, jump! And remember, you can use special techniques, such as the jumping head-butt, and the spinning jump. You'll even have to climb cliffs. Along the way keep up your energy by eating fruits, meat, and vegetables. Survive and you'll battle it out with King Drool himself-and it's going to take more than a towel to mop up this nasty mess!

The new role-model for the NEC Turbo-Grafx appears to be Bonk: a sheepish cave warrior with a very hard head! Each level of Bonk is loaded with prehistoric creatures on land, in the air, and in the sea. Also present are colored flowers that hide extra surprises like life extenders and more monsters. Bonk can waste the bad guys and the Bosses they control by head-butting them or jumping high and landing head-first! Bonus rounds and special techniques round out the game.

This is the first real step NEC has made at developing an identifying character (which will appear in future games). This first effort is very good, from the graphics and animation to the sound effects and game play. The bonus rooms add diversity and the continue is welcome. A bit short, but very good!

8.0

Bonk's Adventure reminds me a lot of the Super Mario character. Bonk is a cute character cast in a well made game filled with above-average brightly drawn colors. Levels are tied togehter well and executed even better. The Bosses are cartoony, yet mean, and whole game is very, very well done.

9.0

A great new action game for the Turbo! You're a caveman who must head-butt his way through prehistoric obstacles and dinosaur foes. Great! Excellent game play and bright and detailed cartoon-like graphics will delight all types of players. Enough challenge for all players.

8.0

Forget about the Cratermazes and Final Laps, this is what the Turbo does best! Bonk is an excellent side-scrolling action/adventure loaded with superb graphics, excellent music and sounds, and enough variety in the play mechanics to allow for all kinds of options. A great game

Little Baldy's back in action in his first ever Game Boy adventure. Heads up! Bonk and King Drool are at it again!

Diving head first into the dangerous terrain of Dinosaur Land, our prehistoric pal faces six, multi-part, side-scrolling rounds of pure bonking pleasure. Seems the Drool dude has snatched the Moon Princess. Need we say more?! It's after Drool we go!

A-Head of the Rest

Game Boy Bonk remains true to his TurboGrafx-16 ancestry. The graphics, minus the wonderful colors, are well detailed, making all the familiar, wonderfully wacky, Drool fools easy to recognize. The ever goofy Bonk tunes are right on the mark, too. You'll also find an abundant crop of Bani-bana flowers that cough up the usual energy-boosting power-ups, such as hearts and fruit.

What sets this adventure apart from the other Bonk adventures is the new and improved mystery meat (a.k.a. Big Meat) that the Grey Bani-bana conceals. When Bonk sinks his teeth into a slab of Little Meat, he gets that famous extra hard head. However, when he chows down on Big Meat, step aside! He sprouts a mean looking Mohawk and develops a mega scream that bowls over the biggest of beasts.

Headstrong

Bonk may be hard-headed, but he's easy to control. His new Mohawk power, along with his usual jumping and teeth-climbing skills, keep him a-head of his enemies.

The only drawback to the Big Meat bounty is that it's too plentiful in the first half of the game, which cuts down the challenge. Even so, as you begin to tackle some of the steep ledges and poisonous water pits in the cart's second half, novice and intermediate gamers will find themselves hungering for more Big Meat.

Head Out for Fun

Hudson Soft's done a fabulous job of bringing the quirky essence of Bonk to the Game Boy. The great graphics and tunes keep you heading straight to the finish. The pint-size challenge may be too prehistoric for advanced gamers, but intermediate players will dig this Bonk adventure.

ProTips:

  • In the second level of Round 5, look for breakable stones in the wall to your left Head butt through them to find 1 ups and hearts.
  • Don't be fooled by the rickety bone bridge in the first scene of Round 3. Step onto the first bone and make it collapse. Sink to the bottom of the water and swim right to find the exit.
  • When you reach the third section of Round 1, travel along the highest ledge to find a bonus round flower.
  • To defeat Eggbert (the Round 2 boss), begin by positioning Bonk on the ledge with the bird's nest. Jump off the ledge and attack this birdbrain's beak with a flying head butt. After landing, turn around and attack from ground level. Repeat this right-to-left, left-to-right attack pattern several times, and victory will be yours.

Bonk has hit the GameBoy! One of the most popular video game figures is now available to go! Return to the times of the cavemen as you help Bonk to rid the world of the evil King Drool. Use Bonk's unusually hard cranium to dispatch the kooky enemies that come his way! Headbutt flowers for power-ups and eat meat to become invincible. A sure hit with the younger gamers.

There's not much you can say to knock this little guy. The game is Bonk, pure and simple. The technical limitations of the machine are really glaring, however, and it's often difficult to plot your course without losing sight of where you're going. But if you like the Bonk game, this portable version shouldn't disappoint.

Bonk is back in an all new adventure! All of the fun from the color version has been translated to the GB cart including the hidden bonus rounds, the killer Grand Bonk move and the various power-ups. Charge up Bonk twice and check out what he looks like with hair! Lots of fun and great for the younger players!

8.0

I was very impressed by this cart! My first thought was "A Turbo game scaled down for GB has got to be cheesy!" I was wrong. The game play is phenomenal and the graphics and sound support are top of the line as far as GB is concerned. The bad points are excessive blurring that hurts my eyes and overly easy levels.

5.0

While it is cute to see the Turbo hero appear for the GameBoy, I am deeply disturbed by the blurred backgrounds and chopped up game play. Let's face it! This is a Turbo game, and should never appear on a Nintendo system! What's next, Bonk for Game Gear? Let's get real folks! I want new titles!

He's back! That cute, lovable cave boy, Bonk, seems to have games popping up everywhere, and now he's in a new adventure for the GameBoy system!

Guide this cool neanderthal nut through many levels of prehistoric gives new meaning to the dache. Bash the enemies with built-in weapon! The cs are cute and comical, and ey add to the hilarious game play. Remember that the only way to win with Bonk is if you use your head! Where's the aspirin?

  • Machine: Turbo Grafx 16

You live in a world of prehistoric swamps, tropical forests and stone age deserts. Humungous dinosaurs, primordial gators and various other slimies, beasties and creepies roam at will.

And the bad news is, evil King Drool has kidnapped the Princess Za (a most excellent-looking babe).

As Bonk, the heroic young Neanderthal head-banger, you will now embark on an epic quest through five levels of monstrous foes to rescue your princess. But there's just one catch. The only weapon you can take with you is your head.

  • Manufacturer: Hudson Soft
  • Machine: NES

A terrific translation of the original Turbo-Grafix-16 version. You've still got your mid-air spins, wall bites, and, of course, plenty of bani-bana flowers and bonus levels.

After years of speculation and rumors, everyone's favorite cave-dude is finally arriving in arcades! Bonk's Adventure by Kaneko sports two-player simultaneous play for a bonkin' good time!

This game has some new stuff in it that the home version doesn't. For one, Bonk now has the ability to collect 'smife bumpers' on his head. WEIRD! Bonk' also can hide his head, which comes in handy during certain points of the game. EVEN WEIRDER!

There are 28 playing courses in all, each of which has a new and exciting set of challenges. The graphics are also vastly superior to any of the home versions seen thus far. Go out and give Bonk's Adventure by Kaneko a few quarters. It's a real head-bangin' good time.

At the dawn of time, Homo Sapiens (that's us) learned to use their heads to survive in the prehistoric world.

Now, Bonk's Adventure from Hudson Soft returns you to the Stone Age as Pithecanthropus Computerus (that's Bonk) where you learn to use your head, literally, all over again.

Punchy Pedro can be mean and he usually punches your lights out. Dodge his blows and go for his head.
