Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back

Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back is one of those games where I find myself asking, who the heck actually asked for this? I got the original game for Christmas from my Aunt back in the day and back then there was a lot of hype behind this game. He was touted as a real rival to Sonic and Mario! Of course, the game came out, and to say it was average is probably being kind. There were sequels, but they were also not great with the 3D game regarded as one of the worst games of all time. So again, who asked for this?

The Woolies Are Back!

Bubsy is a real product of his time, he has that 90s attitude for sure which grows old pretty fast. The story of Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back is not exactly deep, but it is a platformer so we can forgive it for that. The Woolies have come back and they have stolen his prized Golden Yarn and now Bubsy must make his way to their spaceship to get it. The way the game parodies stuff for the level names is fun with my personal favorite being, Star Claws: The Furr Awakens.

Short, But Not Sweet

I have a feeling that they thought if they kept Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back short it would not overstay its welcome. There are 10 levels and some boss fights too, you can either zoom through each level or you can explore and try to find all of the yarn. Considering the price, this game was way too short!

Hitting And Taking Hits

What made the other Bubsy games not be much fun was the gameplay. Bubsy was fast, but he would die in one hit, meaning that running fast was not a good idea, add to this terrible jumping and it is easy to see why so many people hated the game. With Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back it is like they kind of learned from the mistakes of the past, but not really.

Bubsy can pick up a shirt that lets him take a hit, there are frequent checkpoints and you have nine lives at the start of each level. The game is much easier than the previous entries. However, this game is still frustrating as hell. As well as jumping on enemies, Bubsy has this new move where he can bump into people, I think it is supposed to be like what Wario can do. Anyway, this move sucks, and more often than not you jump over the enemy you are trying to hit.

Bubsy Cat Country

I do kind of like the visuals that they have here. The game is 2D like the “classic” Bubsy games but it is all done with 3D rendered graphics and it looks like a cartoon. I would actually say that the visuals are probably the thing I liked best about the game in all honesty with you.

I have to ask the question again, who asked for this? I am not sure why anyone thought that Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back was a good idea. If they wanted to make a frustrating game that was pretty much just as bad as the games that came before it then they achieved this goal. At the end of the day, this is just not a very good or fun game at all.

Pros:

  • I liked the way that the game looks
  • It is kind of crazy that this game exists at all
  • It is kind of fun to talk about
  • Some of the boss fights are fun

Cons:

  • The new attack sucks and more than likely will have you getting hit
  • The game is short and just not much fun to play
