I have been pretty excited to talk about Thymesia for a while now. This is an action RPG that if all things go to plan will be released in time for the holiday season this year. I have been trying to get some of my friends excited and interested in this game so I thought I would share what I know about the game with you good people here today.
With The Good Comes The Bad
The story of Thymesia is one that sounds very cool as it has a dark fantasy vibe going on. The setting of the game is this kingdom that was once a fantastic place all because of the power of alchemy has brought prosperity and greatness to the kingdom. One day, the truth behind what the price to be paid for this alchemy really is comes out and they try to stop using it.
Of course, this does not go smoothly and almost instantly the place is overrun by monsters and darkness. The main character Corvus has the knowledge to understand what is going on, but with his memory loss, he must drive forward to try and find out all he can, but as he does, more secrets and strangeness come to the forefront.
Embracing The Plague
At first glance, Thymesia looks like a typical hack and slash style of combat and I do feel that part of it is. You have a very interesting parrying mechanic and Corvus is pretty nimble and can move around quickly and easily so that he can get around enemies. Combat is challenging, but it is also a lot of fun. I am sure you could get pretty far, button mashing and hacking and slashing, but there is more skill at play here for those that want it.
The “plague” that has overtaken the city can be used to your advantage. You can use plague weapons and turn the tide on these monsters which looks like a lot of fun and also an excuse to wield all these awesome weapons. You can also transform into this raven form during battle which gives you access to more abilities. You can purchase various upgrades and modify your weapons too so there is always something to be striving towards in terms of the gameplay as well as the story.
Blood On Your Soul
The thing whenever a game like Thymesia comes around these days is that the comparison to the Souls games feels like such a lazy comparison to make, but those games are the benchmark for stuff like this. I think that this game more than holds its own in the visual department. I love how dark and miserable everything is and overall, this world and these monsters that they have created are pretty cool.
Now, this may be fixed when the game is released but the camera looks a little bit free flowing for my tastes. I noticed a few times it would go behind a fence or something else that would obscure the camera. Granted as I write this the game is not finished yet, but that is one thing I did notice.
I am very excited for Thymesia to be finished. I love the whole style of this world they have created here and think that the quick-packed action is going to be a lot of fun. I like the idea of these plague weapons and being able to change form is something that is really cool too. If you are a fan of action heavy RPGs then this is a game that you have to check out. For me, not enough people are raving about this game and that is a damn shame.
