Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter is an RTS game that puts you in command of a destroyer as you lead a crew of brave soldiers across the Atlantic in World War II. I remember as a kid my dad on a whim bought me this submarine game for the Sega Mega Drive (the name of it escapes me) and ever since then these naval combat style games have always been something that appealed to me. What makes this one different is that it has a blockbuster movie like campaign to go along with the strategic action.

Following The Leader

The campaign of Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter puts you in charge of not just this badass destroyer, but the other subs that are following you as well. It has a decision-making system where things can change depending on what you do. It sounds pretty damn epic too and like something that you would see in a war movie. Even with the choices, I am not sure how much replay value there will be in the campaign, but it sure as hell looks memorable while it lasts.

Action!

I am not talking about the gameplay here, but the presentation of Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter. This is one of the best-looking strategy/RTS style games that I have seen in a very long time. The actual gameplay sessions are great and the team went above and beyond to be as authentic as possible with the World War II setting here. You history buffs are no doubt going to get a massive kick out of that. What really blew me away here was the cinematics and the movie like voice overs that will greatly help you get more invested in the plot.

Safely Across The Pond

The gameplay of Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter is something that I think RTS and strategy game fans, in general, are going to get a great deal out of. You are the one in charge so all the major decisions are down to you as you try to lead your squad across the Atlantic. Dealing with torpedoes, other boats, subs, and the Nazi threat every step of the way. You have to think about what you are doing and if going head on is the right call or if a more cautious and patient approach might be the better way of doing things.

I get that games like this are not for everyone, but I am really liking what I have seen so far and there is a demo for Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter on Steam that you can check out for free. It is a very challenging game, but I think that the cinematic flair and the constant sense of danger gives it a bit more “oomph” than you usually get with a World War II set RTS game.
