Ok, so I have quite the challenge here today in talking about Earthling's Undertaking which is a turn-based strategy game. Currently, on steam, the game is all in Chinese, and I have no freaking clue what it says! However, I was really pulled in by the fantastic artwork that the game had and as soon as I saw that it had a demo, I thought that I would give it a try and share my thoughts on the game with you fine folks. Keep in mind that nothing in this game is in English, so I had to fumble my way through it the best I could.
An Ancient Kind Of Land
I wish that I could tell you what exactly is going on with the story in Earthling's Undertaking, but as I cannot understand it, I just had to go with it. Thankfully, the game had a fantastic animated intro that made it seem like there were these warring gods, a giant battle, and a whole lot of death and now we have to fight back whatever this invading force is!
A Real Cultural Impact
I do not want to be offensive here, but to me, Earthling's Undertaking has a very Asian kind of design to it and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. Not just in the way that the characters look, but the whole design of the game has a very ancient Chinese mythology thing going on and I think that is very cool. The couple of cut scenes that I saw looked great and the character/creature portraits that the game has are very well done and have a pretty high-quality look about them which I really liked.
An Adventure of Your Choosing
Remember how I said I had to fumble my way through the game? Well, that is actually a bit of a shame as on the steam page for Earthling's Undertaking, it has “choose your own adventure” listed as one of the descriptions. There were moments that I was playing the game when some kind of text box would pop up and give me a few choices. I think that if this does eventually get translated, this sounds very cool and adds a bit of a visual novel element to the game too. Of course, I was just picking random stuff, but I never seemed to get stuck, when I made a choice, the game would continue in one way or another.
Mortal Grid Combat!
I managed to gather that Earthling's Undertaking is a grid based, turn based strategy style of game. You appear to have many different types of units, weapons, and so on at your disposal, but I could not see which ones were best. I was still able to get into the actual combat and with a bit of fumbling around, get a basic idea of how things work. In many ways, it is your typical turn-based strategy game where character placement and careful thinking will win the day.
I know that I was not able to do a huge deep dive on what exactly Earthling's Undertaking has to offer. However, as someone that enjoys a good turn-based strategy game, I think there is a lot to be excited about with this game. I like the whole ancient Asian setting and vibe that the game has going on. It makes for a very cool a mystical kind of experience. As far as the gameplay goes, I can tell even though I could not read what was being said that this is a classic kind of turn based strategy game. To be honest with you, it is the whole “choose your own adventure” aspect of the game that I am most intrigued with.
Pros:
- I love the whole look of the game
- The CGs that I saw were very impressive
- It looks like it could be a fun and challenging turn-based strategy game
- I am very interesting to see what exactly they mean by “choose your own adventure”
Cons:
- None of this game is in English, so I had no idea what was going on
- I do not know if there are any plans for an English patch to be released
