Despite its name, Era of Newborns is clearly not a game made for babies. Featuring some frankly ambitious gameplay mechanics and a vast world to explore, this game promises a lot of possibilities for both players looking for a single-player experience, and those searching for their new MMO of choice.
With a plot that is as convoluted as the vast array of features the game promises, developers Dodigamestudios have a tall order ahead of them to meet players’ expectations. Let’s see what Era of Newborns looks like today, as it nears the end of its early access period.
This is the End
The game takes place in the ashes of a desolate world. After a plague ended the world as we know it, a new breed of humans rises to take control of the wasteland. Enter the Newborns: humans born after the virus decimated the former inhabitants of the world.
The Newborns inherit a world in shambles, forced to learn to survive and adapt to the unforgiving lands of the new world. As you probably might have guessed by now, Era of Newborns is an ambitious crafting and survival game that focuses mostly on character creation.
Era of Newborn’s robust character creation tool will allow players to build whatever character they can think of. From cute models to hideous abominations, possibilities are endless when it comes to designing your Newborn.
Craft and Adapt
This couldn’t be a proper modern survival game without its fair share of looting supplies and crafting gear. Similar to Rust, Era of Newborns has a crafting system that encourages players to look for materials to continually build and upgrade new gear.
Each type of gear will let your character endure the environment better, but you’ll also have to keep in mind that not every type of equipment is fit for every climate. For example, some shirts offer great protection against cold weather, but that would spell certain death in hot climates.
Another thing to always keep in mind is that every piece of gear will weigh down on your character. While you can craft better backpacks that will let you carry more items, that is only a temporary solution. That’s what pets are for.
Pets aren’t just decorations in the world of Era of Newborns. Taking a page out of Fallout 4’s book, pet companions can be used as a mobile backpack of sorts to carry some of your loot and gear. If you’re worried about the possible animal cruelty that’d come from this, worry not any longer: robot dogs are a common species in Era of Newborns.
Choose your Nation
One of the most unique features of Era of Newborns is the ability to assign a nationality to your character. Each nationality comes with a different set of perks, letting some characters from certain nations outperform other nations in particular areas. This sounds great on paper, but one can’t help but worry that the game might be getting too ambitious for its own good.
The list of gameplay mechanics and things to do in Era of Newborns keeps getting longer, and that might not always be great for an indie game. Let’s just hope that this game excels in some areas while avoiding the pitfalls that come from ambitious game design.
Era of Newborns is, in a word, ambitious. The developers promise that this is going to be the ultimate survival game, even though it seems like some of the game’s mechanics could still use a new coat of paint.
