Many games have got off the ground through relying on the popularity of familiar characters. In Gensou SkyDrift, you’ll be doing just that by having girls climb on top of other girls and race them around absurd tracks. The girls are all characters from the popular Touhou Project, and there are 18 to choose from in all. Each girl has different skill sets, and you can swap between the two in mid-air if needed. By pairing a girl who has the best speed for example, with a girl who has the best traction, you can swap between the two during curvy stretches to make the most of them both.
The game is set up to be all the best of classics like Mario Kart 64 mixed in with the nostalgia of playing on our old favorite game systems. Unfortunately, it also comes with all the down sides of playing on those original game systems.
There are 16 different racetracks to zoom around, but speeding through these tracks isn’t a matter of skill. It’s a matter of memorizing where on the track you’re most likely to glitch out and crash for little to no reason at all.
On top of this, the poor graphics make it look like it’s a game for a Play Station 2 at the very best, when it is in fact a modern game. Add on the odd controls which can’t be customized, and you have a game that feels as clunky as it looks. Some players even report that the controls are so uncomfortable that they can only play a few races before they have to rest their hands due to the odd location of the acceleration button.
As part of the celebrated Touhou Project, a great story is more or less expected. Unfortunately the story falls short in this game. The scant storyline lasting just 2 hours and isn’t exactly memorable. That storyline is also the main entertainment for single player people, and unless you have friends interested in playing locally, there’s not much else to do. The game does offer a multi-player online, but it was already dead the first week after opening, which isn’t promising for the future of the game.
Besides the narrow storyline, there is precious little to do. Despite numerous different raceways and characters, it all feels repetitive quickly. There’s no missions, the races are just one circular track with one drift area and the occasional speed rings.
The Touhou project is well known for its spectacular series of games, but this one falls flat. The idea of girls surfing on other girls is already weird, but the poor graphics, lack of storyline, and constant glitching makes this feel extremely low quality.
While a racing game using popular characters from the Touhou project could potentially be a winner, this one is not it. Save your money and buy a better game.
