Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is a collection of remastered versions of three classic games. Released on November 11, 2021 for various platforms, the collection promises to bring back the nostalgia of the PS2-era GTA games with graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements. However, does it live up to its name as a definitive edition, or is it a disappointing cash grab that tarnishes the legacy of these iconic games?

A Trip Down Memory Lane

There is no denying that the GTA trilogy has been influential and groundbreaking in the history of video games. From the open-world sandbox gameplay to the mature themes and humor, these games have set a new standard for freedom and immersion in play. For many fans, revisiting these games is like reliving their childhood memories of causing mayhem and mischief in Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas.

The remastered versions do offer some convenience features that make the games more accessible and enjoyable for modern gamers. For example, you can now pause the game and scan the full map of each game world and drop waypoint markers to your destination. You can also use a shoulder button to bring up a weapon wheel to switch weapons easily. Additionally, San Andreas has a mid-mission checkpointing system that allows you to restart with all your weapons and health intact if you fail or quit a mission.

The collection also features new radio stations and songs that add more variety and flavor to each game's soundtrack. Some of the new songs are from artists that were popular or relevant during the time period of each game, such as Debbie Harry's "Rush Rush" for GTA III or Royce Da 5'9"'s "I'm The King" for San Andreas.

A Technical Mess

Unfortunately, these positives are overshadowed by the numerous technical issues that plague this collection. The graphical improvements are inconsistent and often detrimental to the original art style and atmosphere of each game. The character models look unnatural and cartoonish, with exaggerated facial expressions and animations. The lighting effects are overdone and create unrealistic shadows and reflections. The textures are blurry and low-quality, especially on buildings and vehicles.

The gameplay enhancements are also unevenly applied across the three games. The auto-targeting system feels sluggish and unreliable in GTA III and Vice City compared to San Andreas. The pathfinding system can get confused when you set waypoints on the map, leading you to take longer or more dangerous routes than necessary. Some missions have been altered or removed entirely due to licensing issues or censorship reasons.

The collection is also riddled with bugs, glitches, crashes, freezes, missing features, corrupted saves, performance drops, and other problems that make it frustrating or impossible to play at times. Some examples include rain effects that obscure your vision completely; cars that explode randomly; pedestrians that walk through walls or disappear; missions that fail for no reason; sound effects that cut out or loop endlessly; trophies that don't unlock properly; etc.

The collection feels like an unfinished product that was rushed out without proper testing or quality control. It is clear that Rockstar Games did not put much effort or care into this project compared to their other recent releases such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto V.

Review: 6/10

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is a disappointing collection that fails to deliver on its promise of being a definitive edition of three classic GTA games. It does not respect nor enhance the original vision and experience of these games but rather degrades them with poor graphics and gameplay changes as well as numerous technical issues. It is hard to recommend this collection even for die-hard fans who want to relive their nostalgia unless they are willing to endure its many flaws or wait for patches that may fix some of them.
