Hell yes was what I said the first time I laid my eyes on Mega City Police! With an awesome 80s action movie style in its visuals, tone, and soundtrack, this game is shaping up to be one that could be on my list of games of the year! I have spent a ton and I mean a ton of time with the demo and I have found this to be one of the most action packed, fun, and addictive roguelike shooters of the year.
A Cesspool Of A City!
Remember in the 80s when they would show a crime ridden city of the future? Well, that is pretty much what we have here with Mega City Police. The game has some major Robocop, Judge Dredd, and Running Man vibes and that is awesome. This city is as corrupt as they come and crime is running rampant through the city. The only people willing to stand up against it and not take a payout are the badass police officers that we are not a part of!
I Am The Law!
The game lets us pick from a few different Mega City Police officers at the start, let's face it, 99 percent of us are going to be picking the Robocop looking dude the first time we play this, but this game is packed with nods and winks to other popular 80s franchises. Each character has their own special thing about them be it speed or the damage that they are able to take. You can even unlock more characters as you progress through the game which I think is a lot of fun.
Shoot First, Shoot Second Then Ask Questions!
As much as I love the style, story, and presentation of Mega City Police, it is the gameplay that I feel is what really got its hooks into. This is a top down style roguelike shooter where you go through each stage blasting away enemies and then taking on a tough boss. This game is very challenging, but you can get into a real rhythm with it as you just mow down hordes of enemies. Characters have three slots that you can equip stuff into and there is money you need to grab so you can get new equipment and upgrades that will help you progress. Even when you think you have beaten the game, it loops over, but now things are even more challenging.
I’d Buy That For A Dollar!
As I said at the start of our little look at Mega City Police today, this game has major 80s action movie vibes. It reminds me of many of the classic 80s action movies like the version of Detroit in Robocop or Mega City One from the Judge Dredd comic books or even LA in The Running Man. I love the pixel art here and the way that many of the characters are based on iconic characters we know and love was something I thought was awesome. While the game looks great, the pop synthwave 80s inspired music that you can collect as you play is just the icing on the cake!
I am not exaggerating when I say that Mega City Police is one of the best shooters of the year. I have played a ton of indie games already this year, but I do not see any way that this game is not on my indie game of the year list. Hell, I have had so much fun with it, it could very well be on my general game of the year list too! If you like shooters and are a massive sponge of 80s action movie pop culture, you truly do owe it to yourself to play this game!
Pros:
- This has the ultimate 80s vibe about it
- I love the 80s inspired pixel art
- The soundtrack rocks and is just so 80s
- I love the fact that I have managed to say the 80s four times in this pros section!
Cons:
- I hope that they add even more 80s inspired characters to the mix
- If roguelike shooters do not usually do it for you, this may be a tad too challenging and frustrating for you
