Melatonin

Visit a place where dreams and reality are one and the same in Melatonin, a rhythm game where real life influences your dreams in weird and unexpected ways. Jump, flip, and skip to the rhythm as you explore what this colorful game has in store for you – as long as you have the rhythm to beat it.

For some reason, rhythm-based games have become sort of an oddity in recent years. Much to the dismay of Rhythm Heaven fans, there has been hardly anything like the classic games for a while – until now. Melatonin aims for a certain niche, but it's one that will find a lot to love about this unique little title.

Jump to the Rhythm

Ever seen something in your dreams that reminded you of the day you had? Like getting a new laptop after you spend the day shopping for PC accessories? That's the core concept behind Melatonin.

From flying above mountains of food to jumping on social media platforms (literally,) Melatonin offers a diverse array of dreamy scenarios for players to discover. As you make progress through the levels, you'll also grow to understand what sort of individual your character is, and how his dreams are influenced by their daily routine.

Colorful Landscapes

One aspect that immediately caught my eye about Melatonin is how unique the visuals are. Sure, some of the most creative games I've seen – from a visual point of view – have been rhythm games, like Sound Shapes and Patapon, to name a few.

If you're a fan of pastel colors and soft shapes, you'll certainly love what the dev team has done with Melatonin's visuals. Every level and every character has a lot of charm to them, while also retaining the clearly-defined proportions that make the gameplay segments easy to understand.

No Guides Required

A feature that some players might appreciate – while some others might loathe – is that Melatonin lacks a clearly defined UI during its gameplay sections. Every action is instructed to the player through the use of contextual clues and sound cues, which helps the beautiful art look even more vibrant.

The pacing of the game is also much calmer than the hectic rhythm some players might remember from the Rhythm Heaven series. The entire experience – as short as it is – feels like a calm ride designed to take in the views and forget the troubles of daily life. Quite cathartic for a game about dreams, wouldn't you say?

All in all, I think Melatonin has what it takes to become a proper successor to some of the most innovative rhythm games ever released, as long as you're willing to overlook how easy it is, and how little time it takes to beat. Seriously, the game only has 16 unique minigames, which is about half what a normal Rhythm Heaven title would include.
