I actually really like Mulan and think it is one of the better Disney movies. It has a great message, a lot of action, it is funny and it also has a lot of heart too. One of the strangest things about Mulan is that there really was not a lot of games based on it released. The one I am looking at today is the original Mulan game.

Just Like The Movie….. Kind Of!

Let me start with a positive that Mulan has going for it and that is the story it tells is similar to the hit Disney movie. You play as Mulan who takes her father’s place in the army, tries to remain undetected as a girl and who must face the leader of the Huns. Much of the plot has been removed, but what is here is fairly faithful.

For a GameBoy game, they have actually put a fair bit of text and screens here that move the story along. The quality of these is not all that bad in all honesty with you, but they could have been a tad more polished.

Disney’s B Team

Say what you want about Disney games, one thing that they tend to get right more often than not is the presentation. Disney games, no matter who they are made by (this one is made by THQ) have a slick presentation to them that captures the look and feel of the Disney property they are based on. Mulan is very, very barebones in terms of its presentation. Even for GameBoy, the levels have very little detail in them and the characters look basic and also have very few frames of animation.

What??? It Is Over Already?

Mulan is a very short game; you have three stages and 6 levels and there is not exactly a great deal of variety to the levels that are on offer here if I am being honest. Some levels are side-scrolling platform levels and others are weird top down swimming levels. The levels are short and the game even on the hardest difficulty is rather simple. Mulan can run, jump and throw rocks and the gameplay is rather slow-paced. It does take a minute or two to get the hang of the controls as there is a bit of a delay to the controls.

Mulan was a badass and cool before the whole “girl power” thing went mainstream. However, she does not feel cool or badass in this game and certainly, she does not feel like a powerful warrior which is a real shame.

Unless you are really young, love Mulan or are caught up in the hype of the new movie. Mulan is not an easy game for me to recommend. I think Disney fans may find it interesting that this game may exist so in that regard it may be worth checking out.

Final Score: 6/10

  • It tries to follow the plot of the movie
  • The story screens are decent
  • Two varieties of gameplay
  • The game is quick to get through
  • It is the first game based on Mulan

  • The gameplay is not that exciting
  • It is very barebones in pretty much every regard
