One of the most popular shōnen franchises in recent memory is finally stepping into the realm of battle royale online games with My Hero Ultra Rumble. While the idea of mixing together an anime game and an online battle royale game might sound strange, it works surprisingly well here, delivering a game that's as fun to play for fans of the series and those who don't even know its characters' names.
With a catalog of games that never steps too far from the usual arena brawler, how well does My Hero Academia fare when thrown into the realm of competitive online shooters? We'll start our review by taking a closer look at the characters available, then move on to the gameplay itself before finishing up with some notes on accessibility and balance.
One Justice, Three Heroes
If there's something that My Hero Ultra Rumble that other battle royale titles like PUBG: Battlegrounds cannot, is that the franchise has a massive selection of quirky and charismatic characters – and most of them are here.
From the classics like All Might and Deku to fan-favorites like Todoroki and Bakugo, My Hero Ultra Rumble brings together the most memorable characters from the anime and manga series. Due to the game's nature, more characters should be expected to join the roster at a later date.
Unlike some more solo-centric battle royale games, Ultra Rumble follows the Apex Legends formula of forming teams of three players as the primary way to succeed. This means that not only do you have a variety of team members to choose from (and all of their unique abilities,) but also that the game rewards good teamwork rather than individual performance.
There are five different character archetypes to choose from: strike, assault, rapid, technical, and support. Achieving the right balance of offensive and defensive skills in your team will prove essential to achieving victory.
Not Created Equal
Similar to what happened with One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, it would be hard to balance My Hero Ultra Rumble's characters based on their anime counterparts. Someone like Bakugo would hardly have a chance against All Might, so some liberties had to be taken by the game's designers.
For starters, archetypes have a clear power balance between them. Assault units strike hard, but their feeble defenses make them an easy target for strikers. While some balancing issues can still be felt across the roster, at the very least, each encounter felt like a genuine battle of wits in which any of the players could prove victorious – as long as they knew the strengths (and weaknesses) of their characters.
It's certainly refreshing to see an anime game that drifts away from all the usual arena or 2D fighting. My Hero Ultra Rumble is an odd choice in the increasingly crowded world of battle royale games, but, for anime fans in general, the satisfying gameplay and crisp visuals are a step in the right direction for the genre.
Will it replace the likes of Fortnite as one of the most competitive online battle royale offerings? Maybe not – but My Hero Ultra Rumble is still an amazingly solid gaming experience nonetheless.
My Hero Ultra Rumble offers a quirky battle royale experience that fans of the anime and manga series will no doubt love to play.
