When it comes to mobile game, one of the genres that can make the most sense is racing. Racing games are easy to transmit to the tablet and phone, and thus it makes sense that EA got involved in the development of a Need for Speed title. The 2015 release, Need for Speed: No Limits, was one that manged to gain quite a lot of interest. As the series’ first title on mobile, this is something that really managed to capture the eye of many people who might not have normally turned to mobile gaming.
Does it hold up, though? Or does Need for Speed: No Limits manage to get lapped by other mobile racers?
An interesting first attempt at mobile gaming
The first thing to note about Need for Speed: No Limits is that it is both online and offline. This means that many people who enjoy a more competitive experience should be able to play online with other people. However, given it was released in 2015, you might find the servers are a touch emptier than they were at the games peak.
Like most of the N4S games, this is built around the concept of high-octane street racing and getting away from the law. You can customise your car as you can in almost any other N4S game. Compared to something like Gran Turismo or Forza, though, N4S has always felt more arcade-y in the way it has worked and played. There is a lot to live about this game, with the games story mode offering some interesting opportunities to try and master the tracks and build up your range of vehicles.
There are other events, too, like rival races, series races that limit the cars you can use, and time-limited special races. The car customisation is as ever excellent, allowing you to really build up your own list of specific cars. Some time-limited cars, though, simply do not have the same level of customisation – special cars like some Ferrari cars cannot be customised.
A successful first step into mobile racing (7/10)
While Need for Speed: No Limits can feel its age today and does not compare to other mobile racers that have come out recently, there is some quality hidden amongst this game. It is a solid game, but one thing that really lets it down is the cost involved. There are too many microtransactions needed to fill out all of the car roster, so you might find yourself having to pay just to get your hands on a couple of cars that you like the look of.
However, one thing to note about Need for Speed: No Limits is that it was the first step into mobile gaming for the series. And it is a general success. It is fun to play, with races short and sharp so you can usually fit them in without having to commit hours. It is engaging, fun to play, and generally an enjoyable racing experience. Not perfect, but a solid first step for the series into mobile territory.
Pros
- Fun and engaging enough content to play through
- Great range of cars with some excellent detail overall for a 2015 release
- Gratifying series of different cars to pick from, suiting all petrol heads
Cons
- Microtransactions are extensive and can make building your garage expensive
- Races are short, which more endurance racers might not particularly enjoy
