Nine Sols is one of those games that grabbed my attention within the first few seconds of the trailer! This is a 2D action platformer with challenging combat and an art style that makes you feel like you are playing through a cartoon! As I write this there is a pretty early demo that you can check out which I highly recommend that you do. However, the game is not slated for a release until the middle of 2023, still, I thought we could get our swords out, get in a fighting stance and take a look at this awesome looking game!
Defeating The 9 Sols
The title of the game, Nine Sols actually has a lot to do with the story. This game is very story driven and we play as a forgotten hero who is brought back to this fantasy style land thanks to a child. It is up to this hero to find and destroy the 9 Sols. They keep saying that the game has a “Taopunk” vibe to it and they are saying that the game is a blending of cyberpunk with Taoism which is pretty cool and certainly gives the story a very interesting setting.
Shadows Die Twice
Another reason I have gotten very excited about Nine Sols is the combat. They keep referencing Sekiro and that is more than ok with me. Combat is a fast-paced affair with a heavy emphasis on skill rather than button mashing. Defending and deflecting strikes and other types of attacks plays a big part in the combat and it is the kind of thing that makes getting into fights so much more rewarding. This is the kind of game where you will never want to run away from a fight as it is so much fun!
The Way Of The Warrior
While combat is probably the aspect of the gameplay, I am most excited about. Nine Sols has a lot going on. The whole game is fast, you move really quickly and there is a lot of fo platforming going on here too. You can get various upgrades and items by talking to the many NPCs that fill up this world and you are greatly encouraged to explore each area you are in as you never know what you will find. Challenging and epic boss fights that have an old school “discover the pattern” element to them is here as well.
Usagi Agatsuma
I am pretty confident in saying that the main thing that has probably brought most people to this game is the presentation. This looks like a cartoon that has come to life and the hero we play as, Yi looks to me like a cross between Usagi Yojimbo (who you may know from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Zenitsu Agatsuma from the Demon Slayer series. The whole game has this very high-quality and refined look to it and I am sure on a 4K tv this is going to pop even more. They have created a very interesting, vibrant, and unique world with this game and it truly does come to life because of the amazing visuals.
As you can tell I am pretty pumped for this game. I have pretty much done every single thing that you can do in the demo of Nine Sols and I am patiently waiting for the developer to give us an actual release date.
I am so hyped for this game that I think it may be one that I double dip for here I buy it on PC or PlayStation and then also on the Nintendo Switch a little later, I really hope that someone makes a physical version of this, I am looking at you Limited Run Games!
Pros:
- The setting is cool and unique
- I am loving the vibe that the hero we play as has
- The gameplay is fast-paced and requires some serious skill
- I am very excited about exploring this interesting world
Cons:
- I do wonder if some of the later enemies may be too tough for their own good
- This is a game that really does need to have a physical version!
