If you know anything about me, you know that I love a good story in my video games. Or rather, I love a good source for a story to come from. All stories are based on something that came before, after all. Krut: The Mythic Wings Is a good example of this. It may be a video game, but I’d like to reference some of the older stories that games like these tend to share inspiration from.
Homer of ancient Greece gave us The Odyssey, Shakespeare of the Elizabethan era gave us classics like Romeo and Juliet, and Wu Cheng’en from the Ming dynasty of China gave us Journey to the West. I realize none of these examples are specifically video games, but if you look at the stories in games, just about every story we’ve ever consumed comes from a greater mythology.
So what am I getting at here? Well, Krut: The Mythic Wings is a very unique game for one particular reason: it is based off of ancient southeastern mythology, and tells the story about a Garuda warrior from an enchanted Island known as Himmaphan.
If that all sounded like gibberish to you, don’t worry, I feel the exact same way. But I believe this sort of confused, dissociative feeling is a good thing. I truly believe that there is tremendous value in consuming stories that involve concepts, ideas, and locations that we have never experienced before. We can use these stories to draw from for inspiration, as well as to further appreciate some of the world’s more exotic cultures.
Krut-ical details (gameplay)
Truth be told we don’t know a whole lot about this title as of right now. Currently there is a trailer for this game that demonstrates gameplay, but the developers have been keeping quiet about many of the game’s features, such as length, story beats, possible leveling systems, etc. For right now, it appears to be a sort of 2D-sidescrolling action platformer/hack’n’slash sort of game.
Presentation-wise it actually looks quite nice. I’m not sure why, but the visuals give me a sort of early-90’s anime aesthetic at times. Backgrounds are very colorful and the stage is littered with nice little details while not being overwhelming to the player.
The gameplay almost looks like something out of Ghosts ‘n Goblins, or even something like a more low-tech version of Strider, or Ninja Gaiden. It’s very interesting to see the character fighting all of these weird creatures that have significance in tales native to Thailand that I haven’t encountered yet
Take back a piece of the east
The main developer for this game, Goodjob Media, seems to be located in Thailand. Correct me if I’m wrong, but since all their game updates on Facebook include Taiwanese texts, I’m simply inferring this information.
As an American, I know little of the world outside of my bubble, but I’m looking forward to having my bubble popped, thanks to Krut: The Mythic Wings. But in all seriousness I am looking forward to this game, as well as learning what it’s all actually about.
