The first thing you'd notice about the upcoming Super Catboy is how much this platformer looks like an old-school arcade platformer. Immediately, that after-school nostalgia races to the surface, thinking you'll be spending quarters to get a piece of the feline frenzy. It's a game heading to consoles, but that doesn't make it any less exciting.
Much effort is put into recreating an arcade experience with Super Catboy. The visuals, the mechanics, and the wild narrative seem to sync to send players back to early 90s gaming. So despite the ambitions to trigger nostalgia, there's still the matter of whether the game is good. We've played a demo of Super Catboy to get an idea of gameplay.
Enjoy the Catfight
We weren't kidding when we said nostalgia factors almost exclusively power Super Catboy. The 16-bit pixelated artwork paired with the elementary mechanics of a platformer certain has us reminiscing in days of old. Yet, the game has a modern touch, looking very fluid and lightning-fast pace.
So we get to the matter of Super Catboy is enjoyable to play. From what we've experienced in the demo, it's a challenging platformer. There's some tricky combat that you'll have to use basic skills to overcome. A narrative that's as bizarre as it is loveable, and naturally, some elaborate level design will get players in a whirl.
Super Catboy is a game that's 100% about delivering that 80s and 90s arcade experience. So far, the game is winning on that notion. The players are entertained by the game's over-the-top lore while grasping the challenging levels. At the moment, Super Catboy looks excellent, plays wonderfully, and bubbles up those arcade days where we'd challenge our cognitive skills on a brutal platformer.
It will be interesting to see the full scope and final result of Super Catboy when it comes out soon. The demo gives a pretty good idea of how the rest of the game will play out. But the challenges and narrative of the game motivate one to take this feline madness to the end. It certainly has us intrigued!
Something to Purr About
We've seen a fair few arcade-inspired platformers pass through our consoles. Rivals of Aether seemed to be one of those that stole our attention. But even beyond the crop of these arcade classics, there's something about Super Catboy that reels you in. Perhaps it's the bizarreness of the gameplay. Maybe it's the easy-to-learn but hard-to-master mechanics?
Or maybe it's the simple nostalgia factor? Whatever the case, there's enough offered in the demo to want to make players see the game through indeed. We look forward to the full release and wrapping up the storyline of this cat-covered world. We need to subdue plenty of evil dog mechanical soldiers and mad scientists with our cool-cat platforming abilities!
