In Overlord: Escape from Nazarick, you play Clementine. A girl who starts out completely unarmed and with amnesia, you must help her find weapons and regain some memories to progress in the game. As Clementine remembers more, she regains more use of her abilities and gains more skills.
This game is based off of an extremely popular light novel series, which was later turned into an anime. The details in the series provide a rich backdrop for the game as you attempt to escape the Great Tomb of Nazarick, one level at a time.
The artwork in the game is the traditional pixelized look of most side scrolling platformers. The art isn’t anything breathtaking like the jaw dropping artwork from LUMIONE, but it does the job of sharing where you are and who the characters are well enough.
Unfortunately, the art does make the game look dated—as if it is an old game being rebooted rather than a brand-new game. It also lacks some of the impressive cinematography we’ve seen from other games. The artwork almost gives off a MegaMan vibe rather than anything new or special.
In order to progress in the storyline, you will need to find fragments of Clementine’s memory. Each fragment will unlock a piece of her memory, sometimes revealing a new skill or important piece of information while trying to escape. If you’re familiar with the light novels or the anime, you’ll find rich details to discover and unlock. Even if you’re new and unfamiliar with the storyline, the game is still enjoyable and allows you to pick up the game with no previous experience. For those who are not fans, Clementine was originally a villain from the series, which makes the potential story here very interesting to see how it plays out.
Simple gaming style
Overall, the game is about collecting little memory orbs and fighting other characters from the game. It will be interesting to see what comes of it, since the game is from the villain’s perspective, and what the final piece will look like. The game is essentially relying on the popularity of the series to carry it through, without anything new or unique on top of this to make it a game worth playing.
Overlord: Escape from Nazarick is to be released in Summer of 2022, and there are just a few trailers out right now. Without a demo to test, it’s very difficult to judge how good or bad a game will be. From what information is available, this game seems like a fairly average side scroller. If you’re a fan of the Overlord series, you’ll probably enjoy playing this game. If you’re looking for an exciting new game to entertain you, this game may not be the best one to test out. Proceed with caution.
