Darkness has descended over the deep, and the underwater fairy, Glimmer, has been called to restore light to this unfamiliar world. Lumione is a startlingly beautiful platformer, with a heartwarming story that will leave you thinking about it long after you play the final level.
This beautiful game is scheduled for release on Steam, but meanwhile you can play a demo of the game now that will give you a taste of the puzzles and passion to come. Let’s take a look at what this exciting puzzle game has to offer.
Unreal 4 Engine packs a punch
One of the most noticeable things about Lumione is the incredible graphics produced by the Unreal 4 engine. This underwater world shimmers with life and genuinely feels wet. As you move, Glimmer’s clothing and movement also look realistic for being underwater. Many puzzlers require leaps and bounds that actually aren’t realistic for being in the air, but for water the movements are not only possible but look natural and normal.
Not only are the sets beautiful, but the character himself is richly designed and beautiful. The beautiful combination of fish and boy in such a unique way provides a fresh character that is both original and visually appealing.
When you’re playing a game for some time, the music being enjoyable (or at least not repetitive) is important. This game has soft, charming music that fits well with the theme and isn’t too repetitive. The music really fits the mood of the game, and all the sound effects are also appropriate and realistic for the game.
Some minor challenge issues
Lumione gets challenging very quickly, and sometimes surviving a puzzle requires very precise jumping. It’s very similar to another platformer with a rich storyline, Celeste, in that regard. If you miss or are just slightly off in your path choice, you’ll fail the level and have to try again.
While this isn’t an issue in itself, sometimes what causes you to fail is unfair. In one example, solving a level means avoiding jumping onto dangerous yellow spikes. The lighting however, makes some of the spikes look brown instead of yellow. They look safe, but you’ll still die if you hit them.
This could be improved by making it more clear where it is safe to land. No one wants to restart a level due to an avoidable visual error.
Overall however, the levels are very well thought and obviously well tested. Most of the time figuring out the puzzle is easy enough, but executing it is where the challenge comes from. Each puzzle level is also different, with a wide enough rotation in what kind of puzzle you have to solve to keep it from getting old or feeling repetitive. This makes the game more enjoyable because it is a true test of skill.
This game is very close to being a perfect puzzler. The combination of heartwarming story, rich and beautiful setting, an alien world that’s also incredibly believable, and challenging puzzles that require amazing skill to pull off.
If you enjoy puzzle games and have been looking for something original and different, you’re going to want to save this game to get the moment it comes out.
