There's no doubt that this fantastic Sega game is one of the most iconic titles of the 16-bit generation, featuring fluid and fast gameplay, great music, and some awesome characters. Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis lets you take that classic game on the go, acting as a decent port of the original version. While this Game Boy Advance version has a few issues, it's hard to deny just how exciting and fun the game is. For fans of the Sega brand, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is a great way to play one of your favorite games without needing to hook up a retro game system.
Main Game Features
- Speed through 19 stages
- Collect rings, dodge obstacles, and defeat bosses
- Bonus special mini-game stages
In Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis, you control Sonic, an unbelievably fast hedgehog who must battle his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. If you've played the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, you'll be very familiar with the story in this Game Boy Advance version, as very few changes have been made. Once again, Dr. Robotnik has captured all the adorable animals living on the South Island as he attempts to steal the six powerful Chaos Emeralds and use them for nefarious means. Of course, Sonic must stop Dr. Robotnik from obtaining all the emeralds and save his animal pals along the way.
The story of Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is simple and sweet, featuring memorable characters and some fun locales. With the bright colors and catchy soundtrack, it's hard not to fall in love with this otherwise basic plot. Like other games from the era, there's not a lot of complexity to the narrative, but the game doesn't really suffer from it. The main point is to go fast, collect rings, and have a blast, which is something Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis does well.
To defeat Dr. Robotnik and save South Island, Sonic must travel through six unique zones, each one split into three levels. Each zone has a different theme, taking Sonic through a vibrant forest, lava-filled caves, and more. Your main goal is to reach the end of each level as quickly as possible while attempting to collect gold rings and power-ups along the way. Unfortunately, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis suffers from a few technical issues, including lag, inconsistent music, and more. However, some aspects of the game have been made easier, including boss fights and specific sections of tough levels.
If you enjoyed the first Sonic the Hedgehog or either of its great sequels, namely Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Sonic and Knuckles, you should have a good time with this port. Disregarding the issues the game has, it's still very fun to speed through the colorful environments, defeating enemies in the blink of an eye. This version of the game also offers the exclusive Anniversary Mode, which grants Sonic his iconic “spindash” move that was featured in later games. Overall, this is a decent port with a few flaws, but it's fun nonetheless.
Unless you're a Sonic the Hedgehog purist who can't stand slight changes to the original game, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is a great Game Boy Advance title and perfect for Sega fans. With its quick levels and simple concept, it's an awesome game to play in short bursts, requiring only a bit of concentration.
