Playcraft

Do you like the idea of a game that allows you to basically run about in a massive sandbox and do more or less anything? Then welcome to Playcraft. This new release from Bebop Games has garnered a fair amount of attention, allowing players to hop into a server together and start building their own little utopia. Of course, with such ambition comes limits – and those limits might be enough to stop people form enjoying Playcraft to the full.

Creating your own world – with ‘no limits’?

One of the main selling points of Playcraft is that it basically allows you to build and create your own game worlds within a game setting itself. You can play first-person, third-person, top-down, and you can play alone or with others. You can create games, you can enjoy playing community-built games, and you can basically allow your creativity to run rampant in a pretty decent little game engine.

Sure, the visuals are quite limited and in truth there is a pretty obvious glass ceiling as to how detailed that you can be. The basics are there, though, for a novice games designer with an idea to see what they can put together in this intriguing little world builder. If you have enjoyed things like Minecraft in the past, then there is enough here to help you see what you are getting. Roblox might be another decent example.

Given that Playcraft is under continual development, we expect to see more content and tools to arrive. And one of the big selling points is that every tool and feature is available without having to grind, farm, or earn anything. That makes Playcraft quite an interesting concept.

Bespoke game building with some obvious hangups (7/10)

So, Playcraft is an interesting prospect. It has some intriguing ideas, and it allows for you to build your own dynamic worlds pretty easily. With the fact everything is open to you in terms of tools, too, it is pretty interesting to see how much you can do from day one. However, there are limits.

Playcraft is pretty janky for a start, and you will run into your fair share of bugs and technical issues from the moment you start. It also does have some pretty big limits on how detailed your systems can be; you can make a lot of different kinds of games, sure, but the level of detail that can be included does peak pretty quickly.

If you are looking for a genuine world-building sandbox, you might find more in the form of games like Terraria or Starbound. That being said, there is a significant lack of content that can really minimise what you are able to achieve. If more updates come, though, that glass ceiling could be lifted a little higher.

Pros

  • An interesting concept that does its best to stay true to its word
  • Ideal for novices looking for solo or co-operative development experience
  • No need for grinding or needless spending to get access to major features

Cons

  • No limits is not really true; Playcraft does have a pretty clear ceiling
