Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend is an expansion for the base Postal 2 game that continues the adventure of the absurd and violent protagonist, the Postal Dude. Taking place immediately after the events of the original game, Apocalypse Weekend details the Postal Dude's weekend of continuous mayhem. Instead of exploring an open-world city and going on errands, players progress through linear levels, killing enemies and completing objectives at a much quicker pace. Featuring an upgraded graphics engine, new bladed weapons, and tons of politically incorrect humor, Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend gives fans even more FPS insanity than ever before.
Main Game Features
- Explosive and bloody FPS action
- Dark humor and irreverent storytelling
- Three new weapons to wield
Story
Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend picks up on Saturday, the day after the Postal Dude attempts to commit suicide in the first game. After waking up in Paradise Hospital, the Postal Dude soon succumbs to a series of dark hallucinations due to his head wound. At the same time, an animal experiment within the hospital goes horribly wrong, resulting in bloodthirsty cats with spinning tornado problems. Per Postal Dude's luck, the start of his weekend is only a small slice of the madness that awaits over the next two days.
Due to Apocalypse Weekend's linear nature, the storytelling is much more straightforward. As the player, you don't have a ton of choice in how to complete objectives, as the game pushes you through a series of challenges over two days. Apart from the gameplay perspective, this leaves the experience feeling a bit hollow. The jokes and level objectives are consistently darkly humorous, touching on subjects like viral disease, mental illness, and plenty of other issues. From a narrative standpoint, you'll either find things hilarious, ridiculous, or offensive, completely depending on how well you deal with “shocking” content.
Gameplay
Unlike the base Postal 2 game, Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend is an entirely linear adventure set across two “days” of activities. You start the game in the aforementioned hospital, collecting scissors to throw and food to replenish your health. After you deal with a few feverish bouts of visual hallucinations and violent rage, you're thrust back onto the town of Paradise. As you progress through levels, you'll have to blast down a variety of enemies, including humans, animals, and even zombies. All of the original weapons and items from Postal 2 are included, as well as some new bladed weapons like the Scythe and Boomerang Machete. The gore has also been amped up, so expect gunfights to be exceptionally bloody.
Over the course of your weekend, you'll battle against disease-ridden cows, gun-toting vegetarians, terrorists, and even more wacky enemies.
As always, the focus of the experience is on irreverent and offensive comedy, with bloody gunfights sprinkled between. Unfortunately, the lack of open-world exploration makes Apocalypse Weekend feel a bit dull in comparison to the main game. The new weapons are fun to play with and the shooting is still entertaining, but without player freedom, the Postal experience loses a bit of its quirky charm.
Conclusion
If you love Postal 2 and couldn't wait to find out what happens next in the Postal Dude's story, then Apocalypse Weekend will satisfy. If you're also looking for a wacky and straightforward shooter with an exceptional amount of offensive content and gore, you can find it here.
While some fans might be annoyed by the lack of open-world progression and the short length, Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend is a fun expansion on a truly unique game. Even though the story is lackluster and the content is a bit juvenile, Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend is a great extension of one of our guiltiest gaming pleasures.
Pros
- Fast-paced action
- Entertaining new weapons
- Funny dialogue
