Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary is a game that my wife is really excited about. Back in 2012, she (my girlfriend at the time) was hooked on the original version of this mind-bending puzzle game. It has a sci-fi twist to it as well and the version that was released a couple of years later was more my cup of tea if I am being honest with you. Well, video games with all these anniversary editions that seem to be popping up over the last couple of years love to make me feel old and this is another one. “No way it has been ten years!” was what I said when I heard about this game!

Get Out Of The Ship

For a puzzle game, Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary actually has a pretty damn good story. It is a sci-fi story where you are an astronaut on a strange space station that is on a collision course with Earth! Before it crashes, it will be destroyed to stop it from damaging Earth. You have to make your way to the exit before this happens or you will be killed. There are a few twists and turns here and you do get a bit of a Portal vibe out of the story, all be it without the witty humor.

What Is The Gimmick?

In case you did not play the original game, let me fill you in on what the gameplay of Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary is all about. This is basically a first-person block puzzle type of game. You have different colored blocks and each color offers you something different that it can do. Yellow blocks can be used to make stairs, blue blocks can act like a kind of bounce pad/launcher, green blocks are a sphere or a cube, red blocks can be extended or made smaller and purple blocks allow you to rotate a section of the room you are in. You have to use the various blocks to make your way to the exit point. Some of the later puzzles can be really cryptic, but when you do have your “aha!” moment, you feel like the smartest person in the world.

What Is Old Is Now New

The visuals in Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary have been given a real spit shine and it makes playing through the game so much more epic. While the puzzles at the end of the day are the main draw in a game like this. I actually do enjoy the story that this game is telling and the story has much more meaning and I do feel like I am on this strange spaceship as the graphics are so much better than they were on the original game or even the version that was released a few years back.

The Anniversary Perks

There are some great extras in Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary to truly make sure that this is a celebration. The new commentary from the development team is what I am most interested in as I love stuff like this. While you have all of the content from the original release, there is a whole new chapter added here called Sector 8 and this offers you around four hours of brand-new gameplay to enjoy. You can also play this like you did the original or like the director's cut that was released a couple of years later.

8.5

I have to say that Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary is the only way to enjoy this awesome puzzle game. The original and the director's cut are great and for their time they were truly groundbreaking. However, the improved visuals and the extra content that is here make this the only way that someone new to this should play it. Also, if you did spend a great deal of time with the last release, you will love what they have done here to celebrate ten years of this fantastic puzzle game.

Pros:

  • I got a real kick out of the sci-fi style story being told here
  • The improved visuals add a great deal to the overall experience
  • There are around four hours of new puzzle gameplay to enjoy
  • It has a director’s commentary and many other fun extras

Cons:

  • If puzzle games are not your thing, this may not be for you
  • Once you know the puzzles, you can breeze through the game pretty easily
