Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus is a third-person platforming and shooter game and another entry in the successful Ratchet & Clank series by Insomniac Games. Taking place after the events of Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, this fast-paced action title follows the furry creature Ratchet and his robotic pal Clank on another explosive adventure through space. Like previous games in the series, Into the Nexus provides a blissful mix of challenging 3D platforming with bombastic shooter gameplay, providing an enthralling and exciting mix of entertainment. Although it's shorter than most Ratchet & Clank games, Into the Nexus succeeds by introducing some new concepts and staying true to the series' roots.

Main Game Features

  • Action-packed solo adventure
  • Over 12 upgradeable weapons and gadgets
  • Unlockable Challenge mode

Story

Into the Nexus continues the winding interplanetary tale of Ratchet and Clank, a heroic pair who keep running into villainous masterminds who threaten the universe. At the start of the story, Ratchet and Clank are delivering the captured villain Vendra Prog to serve a quintuple life sentence aboard a massive prison ship.

Unfortunately, while awakening her from cryo-sleep, Vendra is able to escape, forcing Ratchet and Clank to pursue. As they bounce from planet to planet, the pair must stop Vendra and her brother Neftin from opening a portal to the dangerous Netherverse dimension. This exciting adventure is a bit predictable, but its' lighthearted and enjoyable all the same. Featuring a handful of new characters as well as some returning favorites like Captain Quark, Into the Nexus is a fun continuation of the mainline games.

Gameplay

Like the modern Ratchet & Clank “Future” games, Into the Nexus provides a satisfying mixture of classic 3D platforming with explosive and quirky third-person shooting. In addition to the opening tutorial level, Into the Nexus contains five unique planets to explore. Your adventure will guide you through each of the five planets, but there are a handful of side-quests and collectibles to encourage you to check every inch of the map. As always, players start out with a semiautomatic pistol-style weapon, but can purchase new weapons by visiting the gun shops scattered throughout the game. There are over a dozen weapons to collect, including the distracting Nightmare Box as well as the Winterizer, which turns enemies into snowmen.

There are also a few new game mechanics introduced in Into the Nexus, mostly focused on manipulating and defying gravity. After you complete a few rounds of the gladiator-style arena, you'll unlock a jetpack, which Ratchet can use in select areas. Although it's only used in a couple of levels, the jetpack makes you feel extremely powerful, raining down bullets and explosives on enemies from above. When you're not rampaging around as Ratchet, you'll be able to control Clank in some brief side-scrolling platforming sequences. These levels feature some light puzzle-solving, as you can alter the gravitational pull in four different directions. Both inventive and intense, the new mechanics in Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus help push the franchise forward in some fun ways.

Conclusion

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus offers an exhilarating albeit short adventure for fans of the franchise to enjoy, complete with fun weapons and interesting levels. While most of the game is similar to previous entries in the series, Into the Nexus provides some new ideas that help it shine through as its own game. The jetpack is tons of fun to use, the new weapons are a riot, and the core gameplay of the franchise has yet to grow old.
